HENDRIX COLLEGE LEADERSHIP SCHOLARS 4-Year Sequence Beginning Fall of 2006

Leadership Scholars Mission Learning Living Leading

Starting Points Leadership is a way of living and thinking, not simply a set of skills or characteristics Leadership Scholars enter Hendrix with extensive leadership experience Leadership Scholars have a unique opportunity to learn and experience together over four years

Fundamental Components Action Active learning processes that engage mentally, physically, emotionally, and spiritually Interaction Interaction with each other through formal an informal functions. Also, opportunities to interact with other leaders & scholars Production Active processes must include some tangible outcomes Reflection Individual opportunities to take experiences one step further through formal reflection

THE FOUR-YEAR SEQUENCE This sequence provides intentional progression of leadership development. It expects each class to become a learning community while encouraging interaction among all classes.

Common Components PERSONAL REFLECTION READING CAMPUS INVOLVEMENT Various forms and requirements per class. Options include personal writing and Educator postings READING FR, SO, and JR classes read a common text (per class) according to a timeline. “Theory-to-Practice” is achieved using Educator online forum and workshops. SR Scholars choose a personal book. CAMPUS INVOLVEMENT All scholars are expected to take some active role within campus life beyond the classroom (organizational membership, leadership position, etc.). It is highly recommended that each Scholar pursue Propylaea credit as a way to gain a broader perspective of community interactions.

Freshman Year: Foundations Fall Retreat: introduction & team building All-Scholars Kick-Off Workshop series Winter Retreat: Low- & High-Ropes Book: Exploring Leadership (Komives, et al) Year-End Commencement (all scholars), including class “year in review” presentation

Sophomore Year: Exploring the “Leadership Challenge” All-Scholars Kick-Off Weekly Meetings/Workshops Brainstorm/Planning for Workshops w/ JR Class Meetings for book discussion & personal “case studies” Workshops w/ FR Class “Sophomore Musings” presented by Hendrix-Lilly (recommended) The Leadership Challenge (Kouzes & Posner) Sophomore-Scholars retreat & Student Leadership Practices Inventory Year-End Commencement (all scholars), including class presentation

Junior Year: Outreach & Service All-Scholars Kick-Off Weekly Meetings/Workshops Brainstorm/Planning for Workshops w/ SO Class Meetings to plan and coordinate outreach projects Workshops w/ FR Class Winter Retreat with FR class (Winnamocka) Implement community outreach projects Higher Standard of Leadership (Nair) Year-End Commencement (all scholars), including project presentations

Senior Year: YOUR Next Step All-Scholars Kick-Off Independent Project Scheduled Meetings Weekly e-mail w/ Director Meetings w/ Director as needed “My Self as Leader” project Year-end Commencement (all scholars), including individual presentations
