Changes to Mathematics Lessons Why should lessons change? What will change? How will this benefit our children? How can you help? Questions

National Curriculum New National Curriculum focus is on the breadth and depth of knowledge a child has acquired, rather than what ‘level’ they are assessed to be working at. Children will be assessed at the end of Key Stage One as ‘working towards’, ‘working at’ or ‘working beyond’ age related expectations. There are no fixed level descriptors any more. It is a ‘Mastery’ Curriculum with the expectation that all children should be able to make significant individual progress.

‘Raising the bar’ – Key notes from the Advisory Committee on Mathematics Education Fact: England is significantly underachieving in terms of developing able mathematicians. Focus is now on enabling children to achieve a deep mastery of curriculum material – enrich and deepen the content of the curriculum – they should not be accelerated through the curriculum. Encourage more children to pursue mathematical studies at university. Teach children to ‘reason mathematically, solve problems and develop mathematical fluency’

Singapore Bar Model Exchange projects have been set up to study teachers in Shanghai and Singapore due to their successful Mathematics teaching. Mathematics Hubs locally have discussed ways to adapt the lessons for children in Surrey schools. ‘Understanding is key’ and ‘All knowledge is connected’

An observed Year One lesson on the two times table covered: Lesson Example An observed Year One lesson on the two times table covered: Written multiplication sums (the whole times table) Use of Mathematics language ‘factor’ and ‘product’ Arrays – pictures of groups Doubling Halving Competition Discussion time Adding two Subtracting two This was following a 2 week teaching period.. Now think of the five times table, money, scale and time..

Mathematics Resource Packs Why create individual packs? Resources to hand for making quick links Quick fire activities – engaging, fun, active learning Raise Mathematics profile – signify change Saving distribution time – enhanced learning time

KLS Changes… One year trial Lesson Structure Resources Wake up and shake up activity - movement Split Mathematics lesson – two parts (teach, review, practise/teach) Small steps – building blocks Lessons include all areas of Mathematics Children are shown how Mathematics is used in real life Immediate intervention Continued use of enthusiastic practitioners Enthusiastic learners Mathematics packs and notebooks Mathematics workbook-style activities Continued use of songs/video clips Visiting speakers

Impact Aims Children will make links within all areas of Mathematics - measure, shape, money, data handling, number Problem solving ability will increase as children apply their knowledge in a variety of situations Mathematics lessons will be fun and engaging to inspire children and increase confidence ‘Gaps’ in knowledge will be filled from an early age through immediate intervention, practise and repetition

Can you help? We need visitors to talk about their jobs and use of Mathematics Five minutes daily number practise/reinforcement of learning Donations for Mathematics packs

Questions and Thank you
