Themes of Philippians Major Theme: Joy in the Lord. “Joy” found five times. “Rejoice” found eleven. Despite being in custody awaiting trial, Paul found reason to rejoice in this good church. Outline of Major Themes. Chapter 1: Paul’s Present Circumstances. Chapter 2: Have the Mind, Attitude of Christ. Chapter 3: Have the Knowledge of Christ. Chapter 4: Have the Peace of Christ.

Philippians 3:17-21 The Apostles serve as an example and provide a pattern for us to follow. Similar admonitions in I Cor. 4:16; I Cor.11:1-2; Ph. 4:9; II Thess. 3:7-9; II Tim. 1:13. There are many enemies of Christ, whose: End is destruction. god is their fleshly appetite. Minds are set on earthy things. Paul was in tears as he wrote these things to this good church.

Philippians 3:17-4:1 Our Citizenship is in Heaven. From whom we wait for Jesus. When Jesus returns, he will transform our earthy perishable, body to one that is imperishable : Compare to I Cor. 15:43-55. Jesus will subject (subdue) all things to Himself. (I Cor. 15:25-28. Therefore Stand Firm (Fast)! Phil. 1:27. I Cor. 15:58; I Cor. 16:13-14.

Philippians 4:2-4:3 Paul specifically mentions two women, Euodia and Syntyche to live in harmony (be of the same mind). Phil. 1:27; Phil. 2:2 and Phil. 3:16 had already mentioned being of the same mind. They had shared in Paul’s struggle. Even good people can have disagreements. God expects us to overcome and be in harmony! Paul specifically asks someone to help these women. Greek term is “suzugos” or “true companion”. Some think it was a proper name.

Philippians 4:4-4:7 Rejoice in the Lord! Let your gentleness (gentle spirit, forbearance, graciousness, moderation) be known to all men. We are to be calm and moderate in all things. The Lord is at hand (near). God is near to shield and protect us. Psalm 145:18-19. Be anxious for nothing, in everything let your requests be made known to God. I Peter 5:6-7. Through prayer and supplication. With thanksgiving.

Philippians 4:4-4:7 And the peace of God will guard your hearts. We are not capable of comprehending this. It is only available “in Christ Jesus”. With thanksgiving.

Philippians 4:8-4:9 Things on which we are to dwell: True: “loving the truth, speaking the truth, truthful”. Honorable: “sense of gravity and dignity combined”. Just (Right): "righteous," a state of being right, or right conduct, judged whether by the Divine standard, or according to human standards, of what is right.” Pure: "pure from defilement, not contaminated“.

Philippians 4:8-4:9 Things on which we are to dwell: Lovely: “pleasing, agreeable, lovely” Good Report (Repute): "uttering words or sounds of good omen, avoiding ill-omened words, and hence fair-sounding. Admirable“. Virtue (excellent, excellence). Praiseworthy. Anything worthy of praise. They were to practice things they had: Learned, Received, Heard, and Seen in Paul. The God of Peace will be with us.
