What is FIUTS? Independent community non-profit organization Affiliated with the University of Washington Located on the UW campus Created in 1948 by community members, UW faculty, and local business leaders

At the intersection of the FIUTS Mission: At the intersection of the University of Washington and our community, FIUTS inspires lifelong engagement in experiences that build global understanding

FIUTS Programs: Orientation Programming Friendship Programs Events & Activities Student Leadership Development Visiting Programs Wednesday Lunch K-12 Outreach

FIUTS Education Outreach Programming: Connecting international students to local children

Benefits of Education Outreach Programming: Provide opportunities for students to learn about US education system Leadership development and public speaking Introduce local children to diverse cultures Provide role models in diverse fields with diverse backgrounds

FIUTS Classroom Ambassador Program Classroom teachers invite international students to share their culture with K-12 Students in a variety of settings and subjects.

FIUTS Classroom Ambassador Program Marketing to teachers at all levels/responding to community requests Students are recruited in advance and trained in biennial sessions Database of available students is used to match students with special opportunities.

FIUTS Pen Pals Classrooms communicate via email with international students for six weeks, then meet in person at a FIUTS Wednesday Lunch.

FIUTS Pen Pals Relationships with individual teachers built up over time – word of mouth Students are recruited during the weeks before the program begins Curriculum provided to teachers Students are selected for international diversity and academic major

Kids at FIUTS CulturalFest Annual event includes country booths, performances, activities, and food Country booths and activities during the day involve 4-6 classrooms each year Evening performances open to the public

How can you start an education outreach program on your campus? Start small – build a relationship with one teacher at a nearby school Aim for 1-2 programs per year Build on existing social events or programs
