Elements, Compounds and Mixtures Notes # 6

Elements Are pure substances that can’t be changed into simpler substances. Made of only one type of atom The number of protons in the nucleus is what makes each element unique and different from all other elements Elements are listed on the Periodic Table of Elements

Element examples:

Compounds Are pure substances that are made of two or more types of elements They are chemically combined in a specific ratio For example: H2O water is always 2 Hydrogen atoms and 1 Oxygen atom Compounds can only be separated back into simpler elements by chemical change

Compound examples

Mixtures Are made of two or more different substances that are only physical combined (not chemically bound) They do not have a specific ratio They can be separated by a physical change: filtering, sifting, evaporation, magnetism There are two types of mixtures: heterogeneous and homogeneous. Prefix hetero means different Prefix homo means same

Mixtures Heterogeneous mixture: not uniform throughout, you can see the individual parts Examples: trail mix, soil, salad Homogeneous mixture: is uniform throughout, you can not see the different substances Examples: blood, ocean water, kool-aid, soda
