Energy Sources. Fossil Fuels Coal, Oil and Gas are called "fossil fuels" because they are the fossilized remains of prehistoric plants and animals. Coal,
1.Coal, oil, gas and wood are all fuels. When they are burned they release energy. 2.Coal, oil and gas are fossil fuels. They are called non-renewable.

Methods of generating electricity Starter Methods of generating electricity

To understand methods of generating electricity ALL – State some methods of generating electricity MOST – Describe how electricity is generated through fossil fuels, biofuels, nuclear and wind power SOME – Evaluate each method for generating electricity Starter Mind map KEYWORDS: Fossil fuels, nuclear power, uranium, plutonium, wind turbine, biofuels

LO: Understand methods of generating electricity Marketplace activity In this lesson, you will be doing a ‘Marketplace’ activity. Arrange yourselves into groups of 3/4 on your pods!

LO: Understand methods of generating electricity Marketplace activity Read through the hand out you have been given in silence. Underline any key information

LO: Understand methods of generating electricity Marketplace activity You will have 20 minutes to create an information sheet on your method of generating electricity. THIS IS NOT THE SAME AS A POSTER! Your information sheet can have a maximum of 10 words on it. It can have as many pictures and diagrams as you want and you can replace words with secret code if you want (e.g. A = 1, B = 2…) You will be using this information sheet to teach others so make sure it’s good!

Remember to make notes to feedback to your group members. LO: Understand methods of generating electricity Go shopping! Decide who is the ‘stall holder’ in your group. They will stay sat at your table. The remaining members of your group are ‘shoppers’, you must each go to another stall and gather information about the other methods of generating electricity. Remember to make notes to feedback to your group members.

LO: Understand methods of generating electricity Marketplace activity Use your information sheet and the information that your team members have collected to fill in the worksheet with details of: How each of the methods of generating electricity works Advantages/disadvantages of each method Make sure this is done properly as you will be using this sheet to do a test in 10 minutes time!

TEST!

LO: Understand methods of generating electricity Hot Seat debate We will be doing a Hot Seat debate as a class. This will give you a chance to debate your views with other people in the class. Rules: Only the students on the stools can talk You are free to join the debate at any point by walking up to the front and taking the empty stool!

Statement 1 Nuclear power is a much More efficient and LO: Understand methods of generating electricity Statement 1 Nuclear power is a much More efficient and Reliable way of generating Energy than wind power. More money should be Spent on building nuclear Power stations and less On building wind farms

Statement 2 The uk is making too much of An LO: Understand methods of generating electricity Statement 2 The uk is making too much of An effort to be ‘ecofriendly’. Trying to use less fossil fuels And develop other ways of Generating electricity is causing The uk to fall behind other Countries. We should stop this and Burn as many fossil fuels as we want to!

Statement 3 Biofuels are the future of Generating electricity. The uk LO: Understand methods of generating electricity Statement 3 Biofuels are the future of Generating electricity. The uk Should spend the money it spends On building wind farms on Growing crops such as sugar cane That can be converted into Biofuels. This will be a much Better investment than wind farms!

Plenary – Exam question LO: Understand methods of generating electricity Plenary – Exam question Complete the exam question on what we have learnt in today’s lesson
