But now they have been hidden from your eyes. 43 For the days will come upon you when your enemies will throw up a barricade against you, and surround you and hem you in on every side, 44 and they will level you to the ground and your children within you, and they will not leave in you one stone upon another, because you did not recognize the time of your visitation.”

The Importance of Prayer All Alone Matthew 26:36-46 The Importance of Prayer Prayer is important at all times. Pray continually – 1 Thessalonians 5:16. Pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests – Eph. 6:18. Hezekiah “spread it out before the Lord” – 2 Kings 19:14. Prayer strengthens us – Luke 22:43. 8
All Alone Matthew 26:36-46 How to Pray True prayer is prayer to the Father. Conscience of being in God’s presence Children coming to our Father in Heaven “Abba” Effective prayer deliberately submits to God’s will. Putting God and His interests first Praying according to what is in the Bible 9
All Alone Matthew 26:36-46 How to Pray We must be persistent in our prayers. Jesus prays for the same thing over and over in this passage. Paul prays 3x to remove “the thorn in his flesh” – 2 Corinthians 12:7-9. 10
2 Corinthians 12:7-9 (NASB) 7 Because of the surpassing greatness of the revelations, for this reason, to keep me from exalting myself, there was given me a thorn in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to torment me—to keep me from exalting myself! 8 Concerning this I implored the Lord three times that it might leave me. 9 And He has said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness.” Most gladly, therefore, I will rather boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may dwell in me.
All Alone Matthew 26:36-46 How to Pray We must be persistent in our prayers. Jesus prays for the same thing over and over in this passage. Paul prays 3x to remove “the thorn in his flesh” – 2 Corinthians 12:7-9. Persisting in prayer did not get God to change His mind, but persistence in prayer oriented both Paul’s and Jesus’ minds to God’s will. 11
All Alone Matthew 26:36-46 How to Pray We should pray in faith, expecting an answer. The answer may not be what we expect, but we can expect an answer. Jesus is our example – Hebrews 5:7; 4:14-16. 12
Hebrews 5:7 (NASB) 7 In the days of His flesh, He offered up both prayers and supplications with loud crying and tears to the One able to save Him from death, and He was heard because of His piety.
Hebrews 4:14-16 (NASB) 14 Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. 15 For we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who has been tempted in all things as we are, yet without sin. 16 Therefore let us draw near with confidence to the throne of grace, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
All Alone Matthew 26:36-46 How to Pray We should pray in faith, expecting an answer. The answer may not be what we expect, but we can expect an answer. Jesus is our example – Hebrews 5:7; 4:14-16. God hears prayer, answers prayer, commands us to pray; prayer matters and Jesus, Himself, prayed. 13
The Weakness of Our Flesh All Alone Matthew 26:36-46 The Weakness of Our Flesh Jesus said, “the flesh is weak.” Flesh stands for “man, the sinner.” Temptation is strong. Rebellion is strong. The remedy to all this weakness – “watch and pray” 14
All Alone Matthew 26:36-46 Application How is your prayer life? Are you praying for God’s will or yours? Does prayer orient you to have the mind of God? 15
