Development of the North African Turkey Market Jean-Luc Favennec Aviagen Turkeys France

Africa

North Africa and borders

Climate

The 5 countries of North Africa we are looking at represent 182 million peoples. The population is young and still growing. Roughly one third of the population has access to full protein consumption. North Africa produces circa 34 million turkeys per annum. The perception of the turkey in this area is positive, the bird has been known for centuries.

The turkey meat is well accepted and everyone knows what a turkey is. The turkey has names is these countries. More than 90% of the population is Muslim and due to their religious beliefs pork is not consumed offering an opportunity to the turkey industry.

The new generation is changing taste and habit is also looking for easy products to consume.

The turkey meat versatility balances the demand between the white meat and the dark meat. Short distribution chain takes place. Demand is mainly for fresh product except in Egypt. Beef and mutton are very expensive meats. Weather conditions fits well to the turkey production. The regimes use for feeding turkeys are mainly based on corn and soya. Fish meal and wheat by products are used as well in some places and there are no many local ingredients available locally. The wheat grain is not allowed in Morocco (state subsidies)

Morocco

Morocco Stable kingdom. Good labour force and educated people. Started in the very late 1990’s and was clearly associated to further processing. 80% turkeys are slaughtered in modern plants. Produces a nice range of products.

Morocco Opportunities to supply other African countries. An interesting statement from the Ministry of Agriculture n°2129-05 (15 December 2005) Application of the law n° 49-99 sets the minimal distance between poultry facilities. a) 3 kilometres between any breeder operation and a hatchery b) 2 kilometres between any hatchery and other hatchery or other commercial farm c) 1 kilometre between 2 commercial farms

Algeria

Algeria Development of the turkey industry started in the early 2000’s . Tend to concentred commercial projects in the same counties Live markets are a major issue for poultry. The meat is sold and processed mainly by local butchers. Further processing is not very well developed yet. The know-how and labour force will improve with time. No mass tourism

Libya We are not aware of significant numbers placed there but there are a few turkeys in the country. Libya used to import poults many years ago but did not succeed. We will have to wait for better time to raise the turkey industry in that place.

Conclusion In North Africa know-how about turkey production improved a lot and will continue to progress.  However, like every country labor and training is a challenge and we will work with our partners in this region to provide the required training. The infra-structure for the turkey production is variable, we are seeing a lot of investment in the processing and cold storage facilities.

Issues Life market

Conclusion Animal health is a real issue and the major threat is the traditional live market. Some states are trying to refrain movement of live birds but the tradition is still above the laws. We are confident it will change with time.

Per Capita Consumption USDA +JLF

Conclusion The market for turkey is versatile in many places and varies a lot depending on festivals and seasons and that will not change. A drought period will suddenly bring cheap lamb meat to the market and prices of poultry will collapse. Politics, oil price, currencies devaluation and recent events like the revolutions or attacks are not assisting to increase the turkey production but figures show that production has been stable during the last years. Per capita consumption will continue to increase in these countries as it did along the last decade. Vocabulary - tendancy
