Presentation transcript:

The objectives of this presentation are to: Provide an overview of the varied roles of the diagnostic imaging and therapeutic radiography workforce. Outline the basic skills and attributes that staff need. Discuss training and career development opportunities.

90% of hospital patient care pathways require support from the radiography workforce

Teamwork: Patient Support Worker Student Radiographer Assistant Practitioner Practitioner Radiographer Advanced Practitioner Radiographer Consultant Practitioner Radiographer Radiologist Oncologist Volunteer

Support staff carry out a range of varied roles supporting the team according to locally determined needs. An example is the role of chaperone; caring for and preparing patients prior to and following an examination or treatment. Assistant practitioners perform specific clinical imaging examinations or treatment procedures. Assistant practitioners work under the supervision of registered radiographers; radiographers take overall responsibility for the episode of care.

Radiographers must be registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) to practice in the UK http://www.hcpc- uk.co.uk/ To apply for HCPC registration radiographers must currently undertake and pass either a BSc(hons) or MSc level course, dependent upon previous level of study. At registered practitioner level radiographers undertake a broad portfolio of diagnostic examinations/radiotherapy procedures in the delivery of care for either clinical imaging or radiotherapy patients.

Therapeutic radiographer; cares for and supports the patient, their family and carers. Therapeutic radiographers use technology to plan, verify, and deliver treatment of cancer and other pathologies on patient pathways of care.

Diagnostic radiographer; cares for and supports the patient, their family and carers. Diagnostic radiographers use technology to produce images that help to diagnose injury or disease and to monitor the progression of injury or disease on patient pathways of care.

Staff must have the ability to: Remain calm and be able to work under pressure Demonstrate an interest in and understanding of science and technology Work in partnership with patients Exercise decision making skills and demonstrate the ability to advocate on behalf of the patient where appropriate Work as part of the team with the patient at the core of all actions Practice with empathy and compassion

How do I join the team? Check your local hospital job vacancies for details of support staff and trainee assistant practitioner roles. Make an appointment to visit a local radiography department, speak to a careers advisor, radiography practice educator, or attend a hospital or university open day. Search for University open days online: There are 24 Diagnostic Radiography UK courses There are 14 Therapeutic Radiography UK courses Apply to study on a BSc(hons) or MSc degree programme via UCAS.
