Expungement removes information from your record and is available for prior arrests, acquittals, and dismissals and for some cases for which you satisfactorily completed probation or supervision (except DUI and reckless driving cases and sex offenses involving a minor). Sealing restricts public access to information from your record and is available for many misdemeanor and some felony convictions. Convictions subject to sealing are specifically itemized by Illinois statute. For drug-related offenses, you will be required to provide a clean drug test. For cases for which you completed a sentence, a waiting period of 2-5 years (depending on the specific offense) generally is required before you can seek expungement or sealing.
