Grid Institute Scientific Council, September 10, 2008 09/10/2017 Research GRIDS Veronique Donzeau-Gouge, Jean-Michel Muller Grid Institute Scientific Council, September 10, 2008

Goals 09/10/2017 To strengthen the CNRS involvement in Grids research in relation with: the CNRS department of Information and Engineering Sciences (ST2I) INRIA and Universities To reinforce the interactions between research in grid computing and production infrastructure To be the CNRS representative for the national initiatives in Grid research Two Communities which have to discuss To be the contact with the french ministry of research

History 09/10/2017 2000 : the French Ministry of Research creates a research program « ACI GRID ». Funding organizations: INRIA, CNRS, French Ministry, universities and regional councils 3 year projects: 2000 – 2003 : Michel Cosnard 2004 – 2007: Thierry Priol Results: => 30 funded projects => GRID5000: a national infrastructure for Grid research => a strong scientific community

GRID5K Grid5K is an experimental Grid platform, expecting 5000 nodes : 09/10/2017 Grid5K is an experimental Grid platform, expecting 5000 nodes : Highly reconfigurable, controlable, monitorable Dedicated to research on grid technologies. A booking system allows to reserve some nodes to run experiments. It is possible to install and to deploy a complete software package from the OS up to the applications on all the nodes https://www.grid5000.fr/

GRID5K An experimental testbed for research in grid computing 09/10/2017 An experimental testbed for research in grid computing Experimental conditions injector Application Measurement tools Programming Environment Application Runtime Grid or P2P Middleware Operating System Networking Grid'5000 will allow Grid experiments France wide in all these software layers

Grid5K Gathering 9 French sites: 09/10/2017 Gathering 9 French sites: - Paris Rennes Bordeaux Toulouse Nice Grenoble Lyon Nancy Lille which are currently hosting 4790 Grid5000 nodes 10 labs 11 teams Sites are connected together on a 10 Gb/s backbone

CNRS joint labs- INRIA teams 09/10/2017 Nancy ALGORILLE / LORIA : Algorithms for the Grid - Jens Gustedt Lille DOLPHIN / LIFL: Parallel Cooperative Multi-criteria Optimization - El-Ghazali TALBI Lyon GRAAL / LIP: Algorithms and Scheduling for Distributed Heterogeneous Platforms - Frédéric Vivien Saclay GRAND-LARGE / LRI : Global parallel and distributed computing - Franck Cappello Toulouse APO / IRIT: Parallel algorithms and optimization - Patrick R. Amestoy Bordeaux CEPAGE / LABRI : Algorithms for large-scale platforms - Olivier Beaumont

CNRS Joint labs – INRIA teams 09/10/2017 Paris REGAL / LIP6: Large-Scale Distributed Systems and Applications  - Pierre Sens Lyon RESO / LIP: Optimized protocols and software for high performance networks - Pascale Vicat-Blanc Sophia OASIS / I3S: Active Objects, Internet and Security, Middleware and graphic tools - Denis Caromel Rennes PARIS / IRISA: Programming parallel and distributed systems for large scale numerical simulation applications - Thierry Priol Grenoble MESCAL / LIG: Middleware Efficiently SCALable - Bruno Gaujal

CNRS involvement: 2008 09/10/2017 Via human resources coming from the ST2I department 3 new tenured research positions focused on the themes of grid computing : (IRIT , LIP, IRISA) 2 engineers (IRIT, LIG) 2 PhD grants (LABRI, LIFL) And labs support Via international projects: 4 CNRS- JST (Japan) (3 years, 180 Keuros by project) : LORIA, LIFL, IRIT, LRI A network connection has recently been established between Grid5000 and the Japanese Grid NAREGI

CNRS involvement : next year 09/10/2017 We expect : To maintain the number of new tenured research positions which are dedicated to grid computing To increase the number of engineers (temporary positions ?) To create an international laboratory (LIA) CNRS-KEIO-TOKYO universities around networks and grid computing. ( continuation of previous JST projects)

National infrastructure 09/10/2017 2008 : French research Ministry aims at building a large national infrastructure based on GRID5K. (GRID5K to be durable) Organizations involved : INRIA, CNRS (IDGrid), Telecommunication Institute, RENATER Steering committee : {president of each organization} Scientific committee Management committee : {researchers involved in the teams} With an INRIA presidency Ongoing discussions Aim : an organization which will be “symetric” to the one discussed for grids production

Research grids specificities 09/10/2017 Production grid : Platform which must provide services in a continuous and safe way. Research grid : Platform for allowing experiments on all its components (network, middleware, applicative software, applications...). Therefore, the platform can’t be continuous neither reliable. research in different fields in computer sciences : operating systems, parallel computation, high performance networks, distributed data basis, security… Developments and validations of prototypes before using on a production grid

Research grids – production grids 09/10/2017 A joint effort between Research Grids and Production Grids is crucial Research Grids will develop the future software for the production grids Production Grids will provide the framework to test new developments Needs to reinforce or even to establish links between grids research and production communities

Research grids- production grids 09/10/2017 This year : Setting up a working group on the use of grids in engineering sciences (managed by Cecile Germain ) Rising main interests To make a production grid self maintenable, extensible To specify a process for moving software ( from research to production) To suggest and to design metrics, realistic simulations from models and observatories.

How to increase this collaboration ? 09/10/2017 Next year : How to increase this collaboration ? Via working groups, training, scientific events, recruitment of engineers coming from the “grid research family” ? On which topics? The previous ones ? Others topics ?

To Conclude The creation of the CNRS Grid Institute 09/10/2017 The creation of the CNRS Grid Institute Makes visible the contributions provided by the CNRS in the research in grid computing Sets up the CNRS as a representative of the national authorities in this scientific field The Grid Institute is the only French national organization gathering the research and production grid communities. It must be the natural catalyst for exchanges between the two communities : This is our priority for next year
