Frequently Asked Questions ACES Education abroad Frequently Asked Questions What is study abroad? ACES Education Abroad and Illinois Abroad offers students the opportunity to earn credit through classes, conducting research, or participating in internships all over the world while earning credit necessary for graduation. The types of programs available: Faculty-led programs - As the name suggests, faculty-led programs are taught and run by Illinois faculty who go with their students abroad. While on such programs, students earn direct credit as they would for any other course taken at Illinois, but will be assessed a higher course fee. Typically, faculty-led programs run either over the winter/spring breaks or summer. Partner programs (exchange / direct enroll) – These are the traditional type of programs that people think of when considering study abroad. Students that go on these programs go for semesters or academic years. These programs do not always require knowledge of a different language as many classes are offered in English. Additionally, these programs can be cheaper than a semester at Illinois. Look for budget sheets on the program pages to learn more. Credit earned on these programs count toward graduation by being approved through the course approval process.
