ACES Education Abroad and Illinois Abroad offers students the opportunity to earn credit through classes, conducting research, or participating in internships all over the world while earning credit necessary for graduation. The types of programs available: Faculty-led programs - As the name suggests, faculty-led programs are taught and run by Illinois faculty who go with their students abroad. While on such programs, students earn direct credit as they would for any other course taken at Illinois, but will be assessed a higher course fee. Typically, faculty-led programs run either over the winter/spring breaks or summer. Partner programs (exchange / direct enroll) – These are the traditional type of programs that people think of when considering study abroad. Students that go on these programs go for semesters or academic years. These programs do not always require knowledge of a different language as many classes are offered in English. Additionally, these programs can be cheaper than a semester at Illinois. Look for budget sheets on the program pages to learn more. Credit earned on these programs count toward graduation by being approved through the course approval process. Can I use financial aid to study abroad? How does tuition work? Yes, financial aid applies to many of our programs, and many scholarships are also available. You pay any tuition associated with your program through your Illinois student account. All students participating in a semester or summer program are charged Range IV tuition, which is significantly less than the regular semester tuition rate. Exchanges can be the least costly because students do not pay tuition and fees to the partner institution. How will study abroad affect graduation? If students plan early there are a variety of opportunities from a full semester abroad, to summer or a faculty led program that do not delay graduations. Many programs offer opportunities for students to earn general education, major, or elective credit required for degree completion. How do I find the best program for me? What is your most popular program? ACES in France at EI Purpan in Toulouse-This is a summer exchange program in which students take courses at EI Purpan and then complete a one month internship on a French farm or in a field related to their major/career goals. When is the best time to go abroad? The best time is early and often! It depends on your major and where you want to go. Some students go abroad on faculty led programs their freshman year, or go abroad for a summer program after their freshman year. Others go abroad spring semester sophomore year. The most common time is spring semester junior year. How do my classes transfer back? Before you leave, you complete a course approval form with your academic advisor Courses will transfer when you return All courses will transfer back as Illinois credit, as long as you participate in an Illinois approved program (from our website). Yes, all students are assessed health insurance through our international insurance provider.
