Vision Our vision is simple: a livable world. A livable world
Mission Our mission is how we are going to accomplish our vision. We know that politicians don’t create political will, they respond to it. And that it’s our job as citizens to create so much political will that politicians have no other choice than to do what we ask of them. If we’re not talking with those who disagree with us, then you have to ask yourself who is? In DC, there are four paid energy lobbyists for each member of Congress. In the absence of citizens, Congress only hears from industry, party and paid lobbyists. Citizens’ Climate Lobby teaches citizens how to empower themselves; how to develop relationships with their representatives so that we can help Congress see there’s political will for carbon fee and dividend legislation. We endeavor to show people that your voice will make a difference. We have hundreds of chapters across the U.S., all working to build relationships with Congress to pass Carbon Fee and Dividend. To create the political will for climate solutions by enabling individual breakthroughs in personal and political power.
“Never have I found an organization that gave me such confidence I can change the world. What made CCL stand out more than anything was its culture of inclusivity and respect... Before this experience, I viewed Congress as a bickering political dead- end. I was so inspired by these positive interactions between our lobbyists and the staffers that I’m now considering running for office someday so that I can foster more bipartisan cooperation in politics. Because I’m so young, I’ve sometimes not felt taken seriously, but at the conference I was treated as though my age and unique point of view was actually an asset to the organization. As you can tell, this was a life changing experience for me.
When have you experienced a breakthrough? Think about this: Identify a time when you have been empowered through the action of others to experience a personal or political breakthrough. Share your experience in the Q&A section. 29
Power vs. Force “When you reach out to another person through the energy or creativity within you, and the other person responds, you are exercising power. When you make somebody else do something against their will, to me that is not power at all, that is force, and force to me is a negation of power.” –Charles Reich, Power & Law 30
It’s about relationships Why Appreciation, Gratitude & Respect Matter OUR ONE RULE: Treat everyone, even those who disagree with us, with respect, appreciation and gratitude. Planned face to face meeting Changed to staff level meeting Showed appreciation for wetland work The Congressman changed his opinion of us and leaned in for more conversation. 31 19
Laser Talks Brief but powerful statement. Not meant to be memorized, they are meant to be internalized. This will help you respond in your own words.
The Power of Practice Violin Students Malcolm Gladwell “Outliers” 4,000 hours = teachers 8,000 hours = performers 10,000 hours = stars 10,000 hour rule Malcolm Gladwell “Outliers” There wasn’t a single violinist who had practiced 10,000 hours who wasn’t a star. 33 19
Carbon Fee and Dividend Laser Talk Carbon Fee and Dividend A fee is placed on fossil fuels at the source. Starts at $15/ton of CO2 emitted, and increases by $10/ton/year. The net revenues are returned to households. 2/3 break even or receive more in their dividend checks than they pay in higher prices. 34
