Characteristics of Waves
Energy Transfer - Waves. Waves A wave is any disturbance that transmits energy through matter or empty space. Energy can be carried away from it’s source.
Year 1 Science 6.P.1.1. What are waves? “Moving energy” Formed when a force causes vibrations through space or matter Vibrations form wavelike disturbances.
Waves and Wave Properties. A wave is a disturbance that carries energy from place to place. A wave does NOT carry matter with it! It just moves the matter.
What is sound?* Sound begins with a vibration. Sounds travel in waves through a medium.

Waves: Oscillations (back-and-forth or up-and-down motion) that travels from one place to another with a certain velocity (speed and direction.)

Types of Waves Mechanical: Electromagnetic: Waves that travel through matter. Examples: sound waves and water waves. Electromagnetic: Waves that can travel through empty space (as well as through matter). Examples: visible light waves, microwaves, X-rays and radio waves.

Characteristics Amplitude? Wavelength? Frequency? Wave speed? Distance a wave travels in a given amount of time.

Frequency Confusion The shorter the wavelength the higher the frequency of the wave. The higher the frequency the greater the energy of the wave. So what waves have the highest energy and what waves have the least amount of energy?

Kinds of Waves Transverse: Longitudinal: The oscillation of a wave is perpendicular to the direction in which the wave travels. Has crests and troughs Longitudinal: A wave whose oscillation is parallel to the direction in which the wave travels. Has compressions and rarefactions.

The Properties of Light Light spreads out from its source. Light travels in straight lines called rays. Light travels at the speed of light. 299,792 kilometers per second. This is equal to 186,282 miles per second. Light can travel in a vacuum (empty space).
