Advanced Placement Courses (AP) Students take AP test during the month of May Must earn a score of 3, 4 or 5 to be eligible for credit Individual colleges decide what score is necessary to earn credit for courses At KR more than 75% of AP Tests attempted are passed Students who take AP classes are more prepared to succeed in college classes (rigor, workload, time management)

What is Dual Enrollment? Dual enrollment is a program that allows high school students (usually sophomores, juniors, and seniors) to enroll in college courses for credit prior to high school graduation.

Partnerships between Kentridge HS & specific colleges in Washington Goals: Increase participation & engagement in challenging high school classes Ensure students are academically & emotionally prepared for university coursework after graduation. Break down barriers for students and families to have direct access to four-year universities immediately following high school.

University of Washington College in the High School CHS Eng Composition and Literature Sem 1-5 credits (aligned to UW English 111) CHS Eng Composition and Literature Sem 2-5 credits(aligned to UW English 131) CHS French- 5 credits (aligned to UW French 103) CHS Spanish 5-6- 5 credits (aligned to UW Spanish 103) CHS Spanish 7-8 – 5 credits (aligned to UW Spanish 201) In the past two years 100% of student who remained enrolled in CHS English earned college credit.

Green River College at Kentridge CHS Networking Fund- 5 credits (aligned to GRC IT 131) CHS Programming I- 5 credits (aligned to GRC IT 102) AP Comp Science- 5 credits (aligned to GRC IT 219) CHS Windows Server Administration- 5 credits (aligned to GRC IT 160) These classes can be taken as stand alone for dual enrollment college credit or as part of a larger career pathway partnership between Kentridge and Green River College

Details on Credit Process for GRC Course Fees- $39/credit $195 for a 5 credit class Student-voted fees- Varies How to Apply for Admission All CHS students must apply for admission. Students can apply for admission online by visiting www.greenriver.edu/applynow. Students will need this number complete the responsibility agreement and registration form, so apply by October 24. Registering for the College in the High School program is a four-step process. 1. Apply for admission if you do not already have a student record. . 2. Ensure you have met the prerequisites for the course you wish to register for. An assessment at the College or high school transcript may be required to show eligibility for the course. 3. Complete and submit the CHS responsibility and registration form to your instructor. Green River CHS staff will then register you for the appropriate class(es). 4. Pay for your classes online at www.greenriver.edu/online, then click on the “Pay for College” tab. Your Green River student ID number and PIN are required.

Eastern Washington University College in the High School AP Human Geography -5 credits (aligned to EWU Geography 101) AP US History- 5 credits (aligned to EWU History 110) AP Government & Politics- 5 credits (aligned to EWU Government 100) AP Psychology- 5 credits (aligned to EWU Psychology 101)

EWU In High School at KR Fees Course fee $325 $65 per credit Registration- Done in KR Class- December and January Payment due by March 26th. Bills available after March 15th. Term ends June 15thth: Grade for 2nd semester is placed on both the KR and EWU transcript. No Pass/Fail grades are available. EWU grade may be different than high school grade. KR grades and schedule are unchanged if withdrawing from EWU program, students will still remain in the HS class. During 2016-2017 over 95% of students who attempted EWU in the School earned the credits for those courses.

Important to Consider Treatment of transfer credit (and AP scores for that matter) vary widely by institutions. Grades in university courses go on permanent high school and college records. Classrooms feature some students who are dual enrolled in the college program, and some who are not. There is no difference in coursework assigned to students.

What are the Benefits of Dual Enrollment? For Students Work in a KR classroom with a teacher daily Earn college credits as early as 10th grade Stay 100% active in the KR community, see friends, participate in extra-curriculars. Access to online college services (library, writer’s center, tutoring) Greater assurance of earning credit, not having to rely exclusively on the AP exam. No additional coursework, projects, or exams are required for a student who chooses to participate. Counselors can monitor progress and graduation status, just like for any high school classes. They can contact parents and be available to assist students. Teachers get to know students over the course of an entire year and develop their strengths.

What are the Benefits of Dual Enrollment? For Families Communication with Teachers, Skyward access to see grades No relying on outside transportation or scheduling to travel off-campus No adjustment to daily or weekly schedules (same spring break, finals week, etc) Tuition at a significantly discount from what a typical college student pays. A note about Financial Aid: Some families consider seeking federal financial aid to help with the course fee. FAFSA applications prior to 12th grade is discouraged, as federal aid runs on a credit “clock.” Students who receive it during their HS years may run out of eligibility if they don’t finish college by age 21 or 22.
