JRA1/Job Submission and Monitoring Moreno Marzolla INFN Padova

Summary Activity Goals Planning and Resources Results achieved so far Issues Conclusions and Future Directions

Activity Goals / 1 The first goal is to analyze the emerging Grid standards related to Job submission and monitoring JSDL (Job Submission Description Language), an XML notation for describing jobs BES (Basic Execution Service), a WebService- based interface to Computing Elements Extensions to the official specifications should be developed whenever necessary, in order to accommodate OMII-EU needs JSDL provides built-in extension mechanisms

JSDL and BES Client Job 1 JSDL Job 2 JSDL BES interface BES interface CREAM CE UNICORE CE GLOBUS CE

Activity Goals / 2 The second goal is to implement these technologies (plus identified extensions) within OMII-EU partner's infrastructures GLOBUS gLite/EGEE UNICORE

MJRA1.10 OMII-Europe supports BES plus required extensions Planning We are here DJRA1.9 DJRA1.10 M6 M9 M12 M18 M20 M23 MJRA1.7 Definition of the required extensions needed to JSDL to satisfy OMII-Europe requirements MJRA1.8 GridSAM integration into UNICORE: architecture and implementation available MJRA1.9 Implementation of JSDL into OMII-Europe middleware together with the extensions identified MJRA1.10 OMII-Europe supports BES plus required extensions MJRA1.17 BES will be evaluated with respect to its adoption in the middleware of the OMII-Europe partners

Resources Funded Effort INFN 0.9 FLE 0.15 FZJ 0.05 Unfunded Effort UEDIN 1.0 SOTON 0.5 UCHIC 0.5 UWM 0.25

Activity Status Held (mostly) regular monthly phone meetings Interaction by phone, mailing list and wiki First results: MJRA1.7 draft document available Analysis of JSDL, and definition of extensions for GLOBUS, UNICORE and gLite First prototype of JSDL/BES support in the CREAM CE available Hopefully will be demonstrated at SC'06 interop demo session The wiki proved to be a very good collaboration tool. http://grid.pd.infn.it/omii/

Issues The manpower is OK for now, but is likely to be insufficient for MJRA1.8, MJRA1.9 and MJRA1.10 Implementation of JSDL and BES appears challenging Specifications contain errors/typos (esp. BES, which has not been finalized yet) Tools support for Web standards (WSDL/XSD/...) is far from complete Interoperability issues for code produced by different tools (e.g., AXIS vs gSoap vs .NET vs...) First problems arose while trying to implement JSDL/BES in the CREAM CE for the SC'06 interop demo

Conclusions The JRA1/Job Submission activity is going on regularly Interaction using phone meetings, mailing list and wiki Implementations of JSDL and BES will probably be less easy than foreseen
