Effective Learning Analytics at the University of Exeter Professor Wendy Robinson Academic Dean for Students

Key Principles Success for all of our students – so that they can be the best they can be Ensuring that teaching and learning at Exeter supports the student’s journey Using data intelligently with students and staff to enhance teaching excellence and provide personalised support for all of our students

Project Aims To enable individual students to easily monitor and benchmark their own performance To enhance information provision to academic staff responsible for supporting students in their academic journey so that targeted and appropriate interventions can be made To develop meaningful insights into the factors affecting the success of all students; particularly those from widening participation backgrounds

Exeter’s Unique Approach Our focus is on success, not risk of failure or drop out ‘Measuring Engagement and Predicting Success’ – a research project that is mining Exeter’s engagement data Focus on academic performance and students’ preparedness for graduate employment

Project Approach Led by academics in partnership with students Research and Evaluation Data Modelling Technical Interventions Ethics

Student Feedback Day One after launch - 2,500 views, End of Month One - 25,000 views.

Student feedback so far… “Really good "My Grades" feature tracking macro progress. Something I have tried to do myself using Excel so good to have it located easily on the iExeter page - would definitely keep. Could it be personalised to include formatives etc?” “My Grades tab: Great idea, very quick way to compare and visualise grades.” “My Grades is fantastic!” “Grades button is a very good idea and works well!”

Next Steps Further develop and refine staff and student dashboards Develop predictive algorithms Work with students to promote the benefits of ELA and to reassure them about ethical practices Develop interventions support that academic staff can use - especially for widening participation students
