The city of Oryol was founded in 1566, when Ivan the Terrible ordered a fortress built at the two rivers' meeting point to protect Muscovy's southern boundaries. Most people believe the city got its name from the Orleya River, which was subsequently renamed Orlik. But romantics argue that the name, which means "eagle" in Russian, is associated with the proud bird. One old legend says Ivan the Terrible decided to call the town Oryol after a big eagle flew off the top of an oak tree when peasants started to cut it to make way for the foundation of the fortress.

Oryol is very beautiful Oryol is very beautiful. Some of the most picturesque scenes can be viewed from the bridges over the rivers. Almost all the bridges lead to the centre of the city, which is exceptionally picturesque: architectural ensembles of the 18th - 19lh centuries, memorials and the gilded domes of churches - all deep in greenery. Churches are the real treasure and beauty of the city: the Trinity Church, the Iverskaya Church, the Epiphany Church and others. One of the most beautiful historic buildings in Oryol is Michael the Archangel's Church. (It was founded in the first part of the 17-century. The grandeur of the icons and ornaments provides a breathtaking interior, which is open to all.)

There is an important historical place in the center of Oryol where an imposing tank stands on a pedestal now. The volleys of World War II were still thundering, but in the greatest battle of the Oryol - Kursk Bulge the fascists' forces, which had attacked our country, were defeated. World War II brought terrible ordeals to Oryol but also made it famous as the city of the first victory fireworks display.

At that unforgettable time, when our Motherland celebrated the liberation of Oryol and Belgorod from the enemy with the first victory salute, a monument of a tank crew appeared in our city. But victory was not easy; many brave Soviet soldiers fell forever in and around the city, among them members of tank crews.

On the 20th anniversary of the liberation of Oryol in 1963 a new high granite pedestal for the tank was erected, and a memorial with the names of the heroic tank crews was made. An Eternal Flame was lit in the centre of the memorial, and it reminds us of the immortal memory of those who died in World War II. According to tradition, newlyweds and delegations from other cities and countries come to the monument and lay a wreath of flowers on the grave of the heroes and honour the memory of the liberators of Oryol. In 2015 the 75th anniversary of the liberation was celebrated brightly and solemnly.

On the 9th of May 2006 the President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin signed the federal law On the Honorary Title of the Russian Federation “City of Military Glory” to the city of Oryol. The City of Military Glory Obelisk to commemorate Oryol being awarded the status as a city of Military Glory appeared in the centre of Oryol on the eve of the 65th anniversary of Victory Day on the 8 of May 2010.

The Military History Museum of Oryol was opened on August 5, 1983 as the Museum-diorama "Orel offensive operation." tells visitors about participants of local wars and military conflicts, peacekeepers, military advisers and specialists providing international assistance in the second half of the 20th century. exhibits photos and letters of participants in those events, documents, personal belongings and souvenirs brought back from distant countries.

The attitude of the society to the heroic history of the Oryol Region The respondents were asked the following questions: "Do you know the history of your region? Do you remember your great ancestors?" 72% of adults know the history of their homeland and the names of the heroes; 21% believe that the knowledge about the history of their city and their heroes is not good enough; 7% of respondents do not think about these issues.   54 15 31 72 7 21 54% of teenagers know the history of the city and the names of the heroes quite well; 31% of them know the history of the city, but not enough; 15% of the teens do not think about these problems.
