Wink has many years experience in Disability Services in Higher Education both in Arizona and Oregon, most recently with Southern Oregon Univeristy as their adaptive technology and alt-media specialist. Having taught foreign languages at the college level for 25 years has helped bridge the gap between her Disability Resources responsibilities and communicating effectively with both faculty and IT staff on effective accessible solutions. Jayme Johnson Director of Accessibility and User Experience for the California Community Colleges Online Education Initiative. Began working in Disabled Student Programs and Services in 2001 as an Alternate Media Specialist, and has been working to address access issues across the entire California Community College system since joining the High Tech Center Training Unit in 2006. With a focus on identifying solutions and processes to support faculty and staff, Jayme promotes systemic growth by providing resources and guidance in leveraging technology for the success of students with disabilities.

LEARNING OUTCOMES Participants will come away with awareness and understanding of concerns surrounding the creation of accessible math for screen reader output; Participants will learn how to use MathType to create or remediate math handouts/homework/tests for screen reader output using Microsoft Word; Participants will understand the capabilities of the Central Access Reader toolbar & the Central Access CAR Check tool to edit & proofread/proof-listen to math; Participants will have access to the links for downloading the open source software for the CAR reader and CAR Check toolbar; Participants will come away with workflows and strategies to create accessible math for screen reader output.

DISCLAIMER #1 Not covered today is any of the scanning that might go on between what we get from the instructor or download from their LMS site. - Assume we have received the handouts in PDF format. - We ran them through ABBYY FineReader to capture the text. None (or mostly none) of the math is captured. - We have provided a PDF sample and a MSW document which has been somewhat remediated. The rest of the math will have to be re-typed in MathType, saved, checked in CAR Check and Proof-listened in CENTRAL ACCESS READER.

DISCLAIMER #2 It is not easy, quick or painless. It DOES result in high quality TTS Math and it is worth every minute of your time learning how to do this.

Using MathType Jayme Johnson Director of Accessibility and UX CCC Online Education Initiative

Overview MathType Overview Working with MathType in MS Word Configuring MathType Preferences Output Options for Publishing Questions & Demo

Questions?

Thank You! Jayme Johnson www.ccconlineed.org Director of Accessibility and UX California Community College Online Education Initiative email: jjohnson@ccconlineed.org www.ccconlineed.org

CHECKING OUT CAR - Tutorial 1. OPEN CAR 2. CLICK ON BARRED SQUARE IN UPPER RIGHT CORNER. 3. CLICK ON “HELP” THEN 4. SELECT “TUTORIAL”

STARTING YOUR CAR

ENTERING MATH – WHICH FORMAT DO I USE? All math roads lead to MathType (well, not ALL of them) Math is entered in MS Word Equation Editor then converted from Word Equation Editor to MathType Or Math is entered in MS Word using MATH TYPE INLINE equation editor.

CAR: listening for errors Open DOMAIN_AND_RANGE_XML or drag into CAR window. Press the triangle “play” button. Listen for “errors”; check which line and in which problem they occur. Close document in CAR and open DOMAIN_AND_RANGE_XML_corrected. Listen for “errors”

HOW DID YOU DO THAT? The errors in the DOMAIN document were caused by extra spaces we didn’t catch when entering the problems in MATHTYPE. Open the MSW document and run CAR CHECK to find out where the extra spaces are. - Extra spaces can be removed directly in CAR CHECK, or you can go back into the MATHTYPE window and edit the spaces out there.

Editing in MATH TYPE Open the MSW document DOMAIN. Click on one of the equations. A MathType equation box is highlighted. Click inside the box, and the editing window pops up. Find the extra space and delete it. Click “exit” and MT will ask you to resave. Say YES.

Using CAR Check In MSWord OPEN DOMAIN_AND_RANGE_XML in MSWord. CLICK ON CAR CHECK TAB CLICK ON CHECKER, THEN CLICK “IMAGE-ALT TEXT”

EDITING CAR CHECK will show - spaces - alt text - charts & smart art Click on any X to see where the errors are. If just removing white spaces, click on one of the options.

CAR & CAR Check TOOLS with Calculus Open 06_05_CH_Calculus_Early_Transcendentals_2_pages Click on CAR CHECK TAB. How are these problems being recognized?

NOW WHAT? Open MSW Calculus document. Click on MATH TYPE tab. With your mouse, click on the first equation. The MATH TYPE equation box will be highlighted. Double-click the MT equation box, and remove any extra spaces. Click EXIT and resave the document when prompted.

PROOF LISTENING The CAR (Central Access Reader) Toolbar and CAR CHECK are effective next step. Open the CAR CHECK tab from the toolbar of the Microsoft Word document. Run the CAR CHECK. Resave your document. Drag the document into or open with CAR. Listen to the CAR math text-to-speech for accuracy and to catch any oversights previously missed. Listen to ensure you have found all the ERRORS.

Proof listening with CAR toolbar Save the Microsoft document Open the CAR reader Click on the “+” to open a document Click the START button to begin reading Even though we have run the editing, and we have removed extra tabs and spaces, and cleaned up the document, there are still ERRORS. You will hear CAR read “error.” With an MSW document open side-by-side with the CAR reader, continue editing by removing spaces, resave, and listen to the CAR reader again. This is very time-consuming! The payoff is a document that reads properly for a student with a reading disability or who is blind/low vision

PROCESSING FOR ACCURACY Processing - Check for accuracy in math equation - Keep the original PDF close at hand to refer to as needed. - Check both text & math for accuracy, including spelling, punctuation, capitalization etc. in the text; numbers, function signs, super & subscript, spaces, brackets, parentheses etc. in the math

SAVING & OUTPUT The CAR tools allow for: Saving the edited Microsoft Word document Exporting as MP3 file Braille DAISY files HTML & web-ready Large print PDF Kurzweil Wynn wizard

FINAL DISCLAIMER Using the text-to-speech feature of the CAR tool works well for sighted persons Saving the Microsoft Word document with MathType equations embedded Used with MathPlayer & NVDA screen reader/math build works well for blind & low vision persons

USING MATH PLAYER MathPlayer is a free download from Design Science https://www.dessci.com/en/products/mathplayer/download.htm?src=mplogo?src=mplogo Design Science MathPlayer™ 4 works with NonVisual Desktop Access (NVDA) screen reader to speak and Braille math content in Microsoft Word and PowerPoint, Internet Explorer and Firefox. For this to work, you also need to download NVDA.
