Church and Community Mobilisation (CCM)? How does it work? DMCDD - 26th April 2017 David.Crooks@tearfund.org 9am - 9.05 - Introductions

A taste of what it looks like http://www.tearfund.org/en/seeforyourself/asia/meet-yiv-toch/ http://www.tearfund.org/en/seeforyourself/asia/meet-pastor-ke-pich/ More on this case study in the workshop this afternoon 9:05 - 9:10 - Video 9:10 - 9:15 - What caught your attention/struck you?

One off? Several countries started congregation based approaches in the late 1990s - Tanzania, Cambodia, Kenya, Rwanda, Peru Throughout the early 00s, pilot projects matured, evidence began to be gathered of it’s impact, and learning shared and spread In the later 00s early 10s approaches spread to many other countries with about 30% of work being church based, and most countries having some church based initiatives Today Tearfund’s emphasis on a local church based approach now represents one of the core three pillars of its global strategy WHY DO I TELL YOU THIS? A congregational based approach can become mainstream within an organisation, but there are significant potential implications for an organisation that does this! 9:15 - 9:20 - Slide 9:20 - 9:30 - Get the participants to discuss and then suggest the implications of adopting a church based approach for an organisation?

Principles of CCM What might be key values or principles that you would build your local church based approach on? 10 - 10:15 - From the video - Above question? (Break) See also 21 Characteristics - Ingredients for Success

How - Envisioning Leaders How do you convince church leaders to take on something new like CCM? Which leaders? - Organisations, departments (missions, social, discipleship, women), gatekeepers, champions Which levels? - Figureheads, middle managers, practitioners Clear Theology - Biblical conviction and study Seeing is Believing - The exchange visit, reality and testimony Problem Solving - Have the answer to a problem Beware of the “blessing syndrome” - Ownership 10:30 - 10:35: Question 10:35 - 10:45: Slide

How - Training, Learning and Supporting Co-ordinators - Management, strategy, leadership Trainers - Not always there from the start, (ToT consultants) Facilitators - A pilot group (don’t go too big up to 30, 3/church) - Right churches (geography/dependency/conflict) and right people. Coach and Mentor - ToT and all levels Learning Communities - 2 levels: Facilitators and strategists M+E - At the local community, at the project, at the strategic levels (See USB - LIGHT Wheel) 10:45 - 10:50 - Slide

Respecting the Church - Hard Lessons What should we watch out for? How might we harm the local church? Projects vs lifestyle - Ownership, sustainability and discipleship Dependency and Assets based approach - Money in and empowerment Integral Mission Vs development - Christian distinctive and the witness of the church Funding Sources - Overwhelming admin demands, model to fit church or church to fit model, distracting and focus of time Contextualisation - Principles and details 10:50 - 10:55 - Question 10:55 - 11:05 - Slides
