Information Retrieval to conduct Research Comprehensive in scope and time All levels of resources Current and Retrospective Background and Foreground Information

Background Questions Generally ask who, what, why, where or how about a single concept Require general knowledge of disease and therapeutic processes

Examples What are methods of visual field testing in glaucoma? How is the Humphrey Visual Field Analyzer used? What are the ocular causes and potential treatments of visual fatigue and computer vision syndrome? What oral antioxidant combinations and topical vitamin eye drops have been used to treat dry eyes in adult patients?

Answers to Background Questions Resources: Clinical Key (Includes MEDLINE) Science Direct – Best for scientific, technical, and investigative medical research (does not include MEDLINE) Visionet – vision therapy related topics Books – e-Books and print (JVL Library collection)

Clinical Key “All in one” database with full text access to 1,000 books and 500 journals in every medical and surgical specialty Ophthalmology – Over 60 full text books Access to information at all levels from topic overview to evidence-based data in one search Includes full text journal articles, book chapters, MEDLINE citations, videos, images, drug monographs No complicated search strategies or Boolean connectors Get the App Easier than Google – but with reliable, evidence-based results

Clinical Key Register

MEDLINE Covers 1946-present U. S. National Library of Medicine’s premier database. Contains over 20 million citations to journal articles in medicine, nursing, allied health, and basic sciences as they relate to health care Covers 1946-present Clinical Key includes “user friendly” interface. Natural language processing of keywords eliminates complicated searches Use Clinical Key or Ovid MEDLINE for links to full text in our subscribed journals

MEDLINE Register

Science Direct Peer reviewed journal articles and book chapters published by Elsevier in both subscription and open access resources Includes full text of Clinical Key journals published before 2007 Does not include MEDLINE Does include full text of journals not found in MEDLINE searches Good for scientific & technical journals

Science Direct Choose “Advanced Search”

Visionet – no full text Citations to articles in Optometry journals not found in MEDLINE Especially useful for articles on vision therapy, visual training, vision screening, low vision, practice management, etc. Contact Sandra for help

Visionet – produced by SCO

Print Book Collection John Vaughan Library Main Collection – 3d Floor (Call Number Sections: RE, R, Q) Click on “Catalog: Books & More” under Library Info to locate print books

E-Books Resources: Clinical Key Books@Ovid R2 Digital Library Science Direct Access Medicine Click on the links under e-Books to search by book title

Foreground Questions Usually compare two or more concepts – theories, drugs, treatments, tests, harms or benefits of two approaches Require precise information about complex issues Sources should provide current, original research data

Proposed Research Projects Evaluate the accuracy of the Humphrey Visual Field Analyzer compared to the MP-1 in patients with glaucoma Assess efficacy of anti-fatigue lenses versus no intervention in relieving eye strain and computer vision syndrome

Advanced and Evidence-Based Information Retrieval – Lecture II Retrieving and evaluating information that has direct application to clinical research and practice Selecting resources that are current, valid and available at point-of-care Developing search strategies that are feasible within time constraints of clinical practice
