What is Senior Schooling? Senior Schooling is a two year course made up of four semesters. 2017 – Year 11 Semesters 1 and 2 2018 – Year 12 Semesters 3 and 4

Course of study English Maths Student’s choice of four more subjects from: School subjects (SAS) Vocational subjects (VET) Authority subjects (OP)

Queensland Certificate of Education At the end of Year 12 the QCE is awarded to students who successfully meet QCAA requirements

The Queensland Certificate of Education All senior students are expected to attain a QCE. Students must: pass at least one Semester of English pass at least one Semester of Maths achieve at least 20 credits, including 12 units of Core studies (passing 3 subject over 4 semesters)

QCE Credits Most school subjects earn 4 credits over two years Certificate I earns 2 or 3 credits Certificate II earns 4 credits Certificate III earns 6, 7 or 8 credits

Warning! QCE achievement is at risk: when students change subjects when students fail to achieve a C Grade or higher in any subject at the end of each semester Making the right subject choice now is vital!

Prerequisites Prerequisites are: levels of achievement that must be have been demonstrated in order to gain enrolment into some subjects in place to ensure that students enrol in subjects where they can be successful required for all OP subjects Refer to the Subject Selection Book

Overall Positions for entry to University Students must: study 20 semesters (5 subjects x 2 years) of Authority subjects study at least 3 subjects for all 4 semesters sit the QCST NB: Many universities require at least a pass in English or ENL in each of the four semesters.

QLD Rank All students can gain a QTAR at the end of Year 12, even if they are not OP eligible All subjects, including VET Certificates, contribute to the QTAR OP converts to Rank after 12 months QTAR continues to upgrade as more study is completed. Many TAFE courses lead directly into University (some into second year of University)

What is VETiS? Vocational Education and Training in Schools (VETiS) focuses on delivering qualifications to provide students with the skills and knowledge required for specific industries.  The government funds ONE qualification during their time at school. Some subjects are not included in VETiS Ask to be sure which subject is using your VETiS funding Alternatively, students can undertake a qualification through an outside provider of their choice ( e.g. TAFE with Marin8, Beaut8 or Accelr6)

Don’t know what they want to do? Hints and tips: Work backwards: Decide what options you want to have available at the end of Year 12. Create a plan that keeps options open: Check prerequisites carefully Work out a few pathway options with back up plans. Remember that Diploma’s are often used as a stepping stone into University, and can even gain course credit. Be prepared that plans may need to change! SETPs (Student Education and Training Plans) - What are they? SETPs belong to the students and should be a document that grows with student awareness, knowledge and success.

The Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre (QTAC): WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:. QTAC is responsible for assigning students to courses of study at University and TAFE after Year 12 Yr.10 students will receive a use the 2020 Tertiary Prerequisite manual to match their senior subjects to the required entry requirements. Failure to have the prerequisite subject means their application will not be considered to meet criteria. Prerequisites are essential and this means exiting with a Sound Achievement, Assumed knowledge and Recommended study are optional. Field Positions

Reaching your Chosen Qualification Be aware that there are various pathways into University; OP –straight from high school is only one way. At times, students can seek access to University via a rank (prerequisites still required, only valid in QLD) or NON OP - a diploma (most only require completion of Yr 12 and Rank. REMEMBER THAT UNIVERSITY IS NOT NECESSARY FOR ALL CAREER CHOICES AND YOU CAN GET AS MANY OR FEW QUALIFICATIONS AS YOU REQUIRE.

TAFE Courses for School Students TAFE Queensland offers some courses to school students. These will be advised as TAFE advertises through the school Campuses are at Loganlea, Mt Gravatt, Southbank and Acacia Ridge (Skills Tech) Students attend TAFE one day per week Costs are met by the families Most of these courses are offered at Cert 3 level. Be aware that there is a lot of written work involved in a Cert 3 and that students need reasonably good literacy skills. If your student is choosing an OP course, be aware that study at TAFE will take them out of school for one day per week. This is easily accommodated for VET students, however OP students will miss a substantial amount of class time. Students are able to take 5 OP subjects and one non-OP, but you still have to think carefully about this choice.

School-based Apprenticeships and Traineeships (SAT) A SAT allows students to: work for an employer and earn wages train towards a Certificate qualification complete school studies achieve points towards QCE complete only two funded apprenticeships or traineeships, including SATs complete a minimum of 50 days as per the new laws

Building links between Employment agencies and Regional services to support all students graduating to obtain positive outcomes in their career pathway. Assisting students not following a QTAC pathway, to connect with employment options for when they leave school
