Programs characteristics Taiwan 4 year program after college 2 years preclinical 2 years clinical 1000 bed world class hospital State of the art educational system Cuba 7 year program, no college required 1 year premed, 2 years preclincal, 4 years clinical All taught in Spanish, no medical English exposure Regional clinic and hospital system Extensive clinical exposure

Ideas for maximizing Healthcare worker success Health career academy/HCOP programs to include test taking, life skills, language skills and science. Scholarship with commitment to return Spend time in country (at home) during medical school shadowing local physicians (6 months to 1 year) Maintain close contact with Palau throughout training experience (return home, telephone contact, visits) Perform regular assessment of student needs and skills At least 12 month rotating internship in country High procedural volume residency experience Opportunities for students who opt out of medicine

Regional Internship? Done in country under supervision of local physicians and possibly visiting physicians Cover Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, Family Medicine, Obstetrics, Psychiatry, Surgery, Public Health New physicians rotate through hospital and outpatient clinics across the country Internship can vary in length based on needs of students Internships should include classroom activities and updates Regular assessment of skills using written, oral and patient based assessments Should have opportunities for residency training to follow

What would it cost? Basic- in country 12 months would require coordinator and one faculty, salaries for residents: $100,000 since some costs in-kind Hybrid model with additional visiting faculty, external evaluation and experiences in high volume hospitals $300,000 18 month hybrid model to include external evaluation and residency option: $500,000 a year Looking for grant funding: Baxter Gates ICDF (Taiwan) JICA (Japan) Australia Department of Foreign Affairs Asian Development Bank WHO Department of Interior
