Advance- Developing Career & Life-Ready Skills Empowering Students' Internship Search: 6-week Internship Readiness Program Advance- Developing Career & Life-Ready Skills

WELCOME! Program Logistics Assessment & Data Limitations AGENDA: ZACH BROWN AGENDA: Significance of Internships Program Logistics Sarah seavey Assessment & Data Limitations

INTERNSHIPS The department of Student Engagement & Career Development contracted with a documentary company called In The Telling to film stories from employers, alumni, faculty, and students about how to find, prepare, and be successful in a job. All of this filming culminated in creating online modules and video series that can be used in and outside the classroom to teach career education concepts. Hear from students, employers, and faculty on why internships are important

INTERNSHIPS Brainstorm: challenges students face regarding internships In regards to internships, what challenges do students on your campus report? How is your institution addressing students’ ability or inability to find internships? How is your institution addressing students’ ability or inability to obtain internships?

Edge Internship Readiness Program What is Edge? The Edge Internship Readiness Program is designed to empower students with the resources and skills needed to successfully land that coveted internship. Students attend a series of workshops and supplemental labs over six-weeks focused on topics employers consistently cite as critical in the areas of leadership and career preparation. In our competitive economic climate, it is imperative for students to be equipped with real world experiences such as internships before entering the work force. Article is hyperlinked

Internship Readiness Programs Program Logistics Marketing & Registration Staffing Partnership Employer Sponsorship Marketing: the program has a page on our website. We outreach to campus partners at the beginning of the month school returns (January and August). Outreach to students begins two weeks prior to school starting. Marketing consist of flyering around campus, tv screen advertisements, and email. We also partner with other programs across campus that use Edge as a avenue to meet their larger program requirements. Registration: Students register on the Career Development website and are tracked through the CSM. Registration is open for a month Staffing Partnership: The program is a collaboration with Leadership programs. A Career Development and Leadership staff member facilitating the sessions. Last year, our departments merged to create the Student Engagement & Career Development. Employer Sponsorship: We utilize employer event sponsorships to fund the program for staff time, printing of materials and an employer-hosted lunch during the last session. In return, the employer’s logo are included on any marketing material, the webpage and are invited to week 6. The employers join the students in an elevator pitch activity and complete a Q&A session. Write down possible marketing and logistical requirements for creating an internship readiness program at your institution

Edge Internship Readiness Program Assessment & Data Retroactive Assessment on CampusLabs Results What are some limitations or challenges of assessing program information? “I feel exceptionally more prepared and confident in my search after completing Edge.” – Preston, Junior, Business Administration “I learned more about where and how to look for internships as well as improving my elevator speech.” – Luis, Junior, Industrial Engineering Assessment: we use Campuslabs to email the completing students a retroactive assessment including demographic information, free response, and a pre and post confidence scale Results: every semester the students participating in Edge have had 100% increase in confidence after participating in the program. Challenge: Assessing longer-term impact. Currently assessment only report the student who found an internship, part time job or full time job during the 6-week span. We do not promise placement, nor do the employers sponsoring the event. 100% Reported Now Having The Skills To Prepare For Future Internships Reported Learned More About The Internship/Job Search Application Process Of Students Increased Confidence

Internship Readiness Programs Limitations Campus size Resources (monetary, staff etc.) Time Attrition rate What are possible limitations for creating an internship readiness program at your institution? How can you be innovative and modernize an internship readiness program that meets the needs of your students? Campus size Resources (monetary, staff etc.): employer event sponsorship Time: delivering content heavy curriculum in 6 weeks while including active participation and engagement. Edge is held twice over the lunch hours and once after 5pm on a Tuesday and Wednesday. Attrition rate: On average we have had 200 students register each semester, half the students continue past the first two weeks and half of those students complete the requirements and earn a certificate.
