WHAT IS MLAB? The Harvard Mentoring and Language Acquisition in Brazil (MLAB) program aims to help reduce barriers for talented Brazilian youth with tremendous potential and a strong desire to study in the world’s best universities.

WHY MLAB? High-need, high-potential Brazilian students often lack sufficient English language skills and direct contact with role models who understand what it takes to make it to a place like Harvard.

WHY MLAB? Harvard mentors with incredible life stories will prepare and inspire Brazilian mentees to apply for college prep programs in Brazil and to top universities in the U.S.

HOW DOES IT WORK? 1:1 mentor-mentee ratio Training for mentors and mentees before the program starts 7-month virtual mentoring curriculum (October 2016 – April 2017) English immersion for mentees to engage with their mentors face to face in São Paulo (January 2017)

THE MLAB MENTEE Brazilian student First or second year of high school Interested in attending a top university in the United States Academic results above average From low-income family and/or receiving a scholarship (*)

THE MLAB MENTEE Strong English skills Committed to their mentor and to the program’s values Eager to learn more about college life in the U.S. through cultural exchange and direct interaction with Harvard students Desire to impact the World

THE MLAB MENTOR Harvard College student From low-income family and/or receiving a scholarship (*) Beginner or early-intermediate in Portuguese language Previous mentoring experience

THE MLAB MENTOR Similar background to Brazilian students: Receiving a scholarship, first generation student, etc. Committed to their mentee and to the program’s values Strong interest in learning more about Brazil through cultural exchange and direct interaction with Brazilians Availability to be fully engaged in all MLAB activities, including training and check-ins

WHO CAN APPLY? Mentorss Harvard College students that fit the requirements of MLAB, willing to commit to the program goals and guidelines and available to participate in a weekly mentoring program.
