Luzon Strait The Philippines and its climate Sulu Sea Climate: humid equatorial climate or tropical maritime Type 1 Climate: Two pronounced seasons: dry from November to April, wet during the rest of the year. Type 2 Climate: No dry season with a pronounced maximum rainfall from November to January. Type 3 Climate: Seasons not very pronounced, relatively dry from November to April and wet during the rest of the year. Type 4 Climate: Rainfall more or less evenly distributed throughout the year. South China Sea Philippine Sea Humid equatorial climate – marked by high temp. and heavy annual rainfall.. Sulu Sea Dipolog Mean annual rr=2379.3 Infanta =3967.3 Hinatuan =4168.3 Gen San Celebes Sea

PHILIPPINE VULNERABILITIES TO GLOBAL WARMING/ CLIMATE CHANGE VISITED BY AVERAGE 20 TYPHOONS EVERY YEAR With the projected increase in temperature this could mean much stronger and more intense tropical cyclones. This graph shows the actual tracks of tropical cyclones that entered the PAR during the period 1948-2005. A total of 1128 tropical cyclones entered the PAR and 56 % of this tropical cyclone reached typhoon intensity. The Northweastern Pacific is the most active tropical basin in the world and any increase in sea surface temperature as a result of climate change will affect future intensity of tropical cyclone. This only shows how the Philippines is vulnerable to climate change. With the projected increase in temperature this could mean stronger and more intense tropical cyclones. Max-1993 (33 cyclones) Min-1998-9 1128 Actual tracks HIGHLY SUSCEPTIBLE TO TYPHOONS – LOCATED WITHIN PACIFIC TYPHOON BELT AREA

Frequency of Tropical Cyclones in the Philippines Period: 1948-2005 Northern Luzon is most frequently hit by tropical cyclones followed by Catanduanes and Northern Samar and least in the Mindanao area.
