Year 2 2016-2017

Developing Skills Reading –The focus early on is phonics and the children will be decoding words by sounding them out. As this skill is embedded, the focus moves to comprehension and reading for meaning. Children now need to build up their reading stamina by reading a wide range of different books. By listening to stories, children develop an interest in books and learn to express their preferences, deduce information, predict etc.

Writing Handwriting - developing pencil control, formation of letters, size and spacing. Fine motor control. Spelling – using phonics to isolate sounds within words. Writing lists, messages. Have a go spelling. Rehearsing sentences before writing. Big Writing. Vocabulary, Connectives, Openers, Punctuation.

Maths A sound understanding of the number system is essential for children to carry out calculations efficiently and accurately.

Everyday maths How many? How many more? More or less. How many left? What is the difference between? How many altogether? How many lots of? How many in each group? Does everyone have an equal share, how many each? Longer than/shorter than, heavier than/lighter than. Time

Supporting children’s learning Use resources – cubes, coins, playing cards, lego bricks, number lines, 100 squares, arrays.

Other curriculum areas Cross curricular topics which cover all subjects. ‘Great Britain’ – Geography and History Focus Great Fire of London Transport- With a trip to Brooklands Museum. Dinosaurs- Science Focus- Trip to National history Museum to see the skeletons? Minibeasts-Science Focus Asia-Geography Focus Healthy Humans-Science and DT Foucus

PE PE will take place on a Monday and Thursday. Please make sure your child has their PE kit in school on these days. Children should have white sports socks in their PE bags.

Gaining Independence Become independent learners, able to work without adult support. Develop confidence in their own abilities. Work collaboratively during group work.

Homework Reading at home as often as possible. Spelling – books go home on Wednesday, return on Monday Maths – books go home on Wednesday, return on Monday ‘Honeycomb Homework’ – a topic based homework book which goes home every three weeks, containing three compulsory tasks and several optional tasks which children can complete to expand their knowledge. Eg. Quizzes, fact files, games, experiments, art work.
