OCR Sport Science HOW THE COURSE WORKS

THEORY Course is split into 4 modules each weighing 25% of final mark. Two Mandatory units R041-Reducing the Risk of Sports Injuries (Exam) and R042- Applying the Principles of Training. Two Additional Units of R045- Sports Nutrition and R046 – Technology in Sports.

2 Mandatory Units R041 -Reducing the Risk of Sports Injuries (30 GLH) Understanding different factors which influence injury Understanding how warm ups and cool downs help prevent injury Know how to respond to injuries in a sporting context. Know how to respond to common medical conditions Assessed by 1hr written exam 25% R042 – Applying Principles of training (30 GLH) Know the principles of training in a sporting context Know how training methods target different fitness components Be able to conduct fitness tests Be able to develop fitness training programmes Assessed by coursework – 25%

Optional Units Assessed by coursework 25% Assessed by coursework 25% R045 – Sports Nutrition (30 GLH) Know about nutrients needed for a healthy, balanced diet Understand the importance of nutrition in sport Know about the effects of a poor diet on sports performance and participation Be able to develop diet plans for performers Assessed by coursework 25% R046 – Technology in Sport (30 GLH) Know how technology is used in sport Understand the positive effects of sports technology Understand the negative effects of sports technology Be able to evaluate the impact of technology in sport Assessed by coursework 25%

THEORY Each module is marked out of 60 and has 30 guided learning hours Learners should spend 10 hours on assessment tasks R041 - Reducing the risk of Sports Injuries Exam… Question paper comprises of short answer questions, extended response and some multiple choice. Assesses the quality of written communication.

Practical Opportunities R041 -Reducing the Risk of Sports Injuries Planning and carrying out own warm ups/cool downs to other members of the group. Sports specific injury scenarios/ treatments Carry out EAP on local sports facilities R042 – Applying Principles of training Create session plans including principles of training Carry out and record fitness tests Lead training sessions focussing on applying principles of training/ training methods

Practical Opportunities R045 – Sports Nutrition Link to Applying principles of training and how your diet effect this R046 – Technology in sport Use of modern technology to play sport. Use of Ipads to analyse and improve performance

Sport Science IS NOT : IS: Just another PE lesson. A subject you should have no problem gaining a high grade IF you put the work in. Fun, enjoyable, worthwhile and valuable.
