Internal Parasitism Anthelmintic resistance

History of ACSRPC In 2001, parasitologists, forage scientists, animal nutritionists and extension specialists from 4 states in the southern US, the US Virgin Islands, Denmark, and New Zealand met at FVSU to develop ideas for sustainable small ruminant parasite management research and outreach, funding proposals Conclusions from this meeting: Anthelmintic ‘silver bullet’ was no longer viable Sustainable parasite control program would require an integrated program Cooperation between different institutions and disciplines Strong integration between research and extension is key

Research and outreach activities for the ACSRPC for the last 13 years All consortium projects, including funding proposals, have been multi-institutional and multi-disciplinary Consortium members meet regularly at FVSU to facilitate planning of future research and outreach initiatives Focus on sustainable parasite management

Difficult personalities Lack of communication ACSRPC – Challenges Difficult personalities It isn’t me, it’s the group Lack of communication Honest and open interactions Reluctance to share resources Good of the group Overemphasis on individual growth Keep group mission foremost

Not playing by the rules Funding challenges ACSRPC – Challenges Not playing by the rules Focus on group principles Funding challenges Think outside the box Not articulating impacts to stakeholders Assess impacts and publicize successes Lack of administrative support Administrative appreciation of the value of consortium activities is vital

ACSRPC – Reasons for Success Multi-disciplinary, multi-institutional All projects collaborative Share resources, funding Producer focus Farmer input sought in research and outreach planning Producer training included in funding, research initiatives Communication ACSRPC members meet at least twice per year (spring and fall) plan research and outreach, brainstorm solutions to challenges Regular on-line discussions

ACSRPC – Future Considerations Expanded membership to address emerging parasite challenges due to global warming Continue to develop and validate appropriate (economically viable) integrated parasite management programs
