Skeletal System The skeletal system includes all of the bones and joints in the body. Each bone is a complex living organ that is made up of many cells, protein fibers, and minerals.
Functions of the Skeletal System Support and Protection: Main purpose is to provide support and protection for the soft tissues of the body Movement: Also provides attachment points for the muscles to allow movement at the joints Storage and Production of Materials Storage and production of materials – Store essential substances like calcium and phosphorus. Some bones also produce blood cells.
Skeletal System – Bones and Joints Your bones are living structures that undergo change throughout your life. Bones consist of two types of tissues: compact bone and spongy bone. Another type of tissue that fills the spaces in our bones is marrow. There are 2 types of marrow: red and yellow Red marrow produces many types of blood cells Yellow marrow stores fat.
Skeletal System – Bones and Joints Joints allow for movement and protect bones from friction and force. Pivot Joint – allows side to side movement (ex: your head connected to your vertebra) Gliding Joint – allows movement in many directions as the bones slide along each other (ex: wrists and ankles) Ball and Socket Joint – allows movement in all directions (ex: shoulders and hips) Hinge Joint – allows bending and straightening movements (ex: elbows and knees) Bones are held together at joints by ligaments
Keeping our bones healthy Eating Well Getting enough calcium and phosphorus helps our bones grow to maximum size and strength Exercising Getting plenty of weight-bearing physical activity helps build strong bones and prevent osteoporosis. Avoid bone injuries Wear appropriate safety equipment when necessary
Keeping our bones healthy cont… Avoid Joint injuries Proper warm-up and stretching are important to prevent joint injuries. Medical Check-ups Regular check-ups will help identify any problems and doctors can also advise you on preventing injuries.
Types of Joint injuries Sprains – overstretched or torn ligament Dislocations – the ends of bones in a joint are forced out of normal position Torn Cartilage – serious damage to the cartilage between the bones in a joint Overuse Injuries – when an activity is performed too often or too strenuously joints can become irritated or inflamed.
