Presentation transcript:

Alternative dispute resolution (ADR) has been utilized by the Florida Court System to resolve disputes for over 30 years, starting with the creation of the first citizen dispute settlement (CDS) center in Dade County in 1975 Rule 10.200 prescribes ethical standards of conduct for certified and court-appointed mediators. http://www.flcourts.org/core/fileparse.php/422/urlt/PartIIofRulesforMediators.pdf

The Florida Dispute Resolution Center (DRC) was established in 1986 to provide staff assistance to four Supreme Court of Florida mediation boards, to certify mediators and to certify mediation training programs. As of October 2016, there were 5,784 individuals certified as mediators. The breakdown by certification is as follows: 2150 certified county mediators 2222 certified family mediators 3298 certified circuit mediators 234 certified dependency mediators 496 certified appellate mediators

On October 27, 2016, the Florida Supreme Court adopted proposed amendments to the Florida Rules for Certified and Court-Appointed Mediators in re: Amendments to the Florida Rules for Certified and Court-Appointed Mediators, SC15-875 (Fla. 2016). The amendments to the rules change the title of Part III to “Mediation Certification Applications and Discipline” to clarify that this part of the rules pertains to the qualify- cation of applicants as well as discipline.
