Fraternity/Sorority Life at UCM TO ADD NEW SLIDE LAYOUTS: Make sure you have the ‘Home’ tab selected at the top of the PowerPoint screen and click the down facing arrow to the right on the ‘New Slide’ button that is located in the second section. Look through the layouts shown and click on the one you would like to work on. TO REMOVE SLIDES: Select the slide you would like to remove in the vertical window on the left side of the screen then hit the ‘Delete’ (on Mac) or the ‘Backspace’ (on PC). ABCs of Fraternity/Sorority Life This session will focus on: A: About Fraternity/Sorority Life at UCM B: Becoming a member of a Fraternity/Sorority at UCM C: Common Concerns/Questions Families have of Fraternity/Sorority Life

A: About UCM Fraternity/Sorority Life 27 National Chapters representing 3 National Governance Structures 10 IFC Fraternities 8 NPC Sororities 9 NPHC Fraternities & Sororities Fall 2016 over 1350 Active Greek Students Housing 8 NPC Sororities housed on campus in Panhellenic Hall 8 IFC Fraternities housed on campus in Fraternity Complex 2 IFC Fraternities housed off campus (housing not managed by University) 9 NPHC Chapters have Chapter rooms for meetings in South Todd Hall (no one lives in the chapter rooms) ** Same Residence Hall Agreement Same Rate as other Residence Halls (Fraternity Complex pays previous year rate due to community bathrooms)

A: About UCM Fraternity/Sorority Life Academic Success: 7 consecutive years the Fraternity/Sorority Life average GPA exceeded the University average GPA Over 20 different scholarships available to Fraternity/Sorority Life members from alumni & friends of community Service & Philanthropy Work: Each group supports National philanthropic cause Fraternity/Sorority community gives back locally as whole community 25,000+ items donated locally $20,000+ donated locally 1,000+ hours given locally Leadership: Involved in many clubs & organizations as leaders (Student Government, Academic areas, Student Ambassadors, etc.) Leadership roles within their chapter (officers, committee work, etc.) Brotherhood/Sisterhood/Connections: Active alumni network Advisor support (multiple alumni advisors for each group) Regional and National conferences and seminars

B: Becoming a Member All Chapters require 2.50 cumulative GPA If student has attempted 12 or more college credits it will be based on college GPA If student has attempted 11 or less or NO college credits it will be based on high school GPA Governance Council Specifics NPHC (9 groups of the National Pan-Hellenic Council) Intake usually in the spring as the student MUST have 12 or more UCM hours earned and at least 2.50 cumulative GPA from college. Interest meetings as well as programs and events to get to know the groups IFC (10 groups of the Interfraternity Council) Year round recruitment. Students can join anytime after grade verification for eligibility. Students can visit one or all 10 groups. IFC will sponsor events at start of Fall semester to help men learn about the fraternities. Panhellenic (8 groups of the National Panhellenic Council) Formal Recruitment Process: First Week of Fall (August 17-21, 2017). Registration required and $50 fee - registration must be complete by August 16 at 8:00 AM. Fee covers 2 meals, t-shirt, and computer fees. Day 1: Visit 4 groups (t-shirt and casual attire) Day 2: Visit 4 groups (t-shirt and casual attire) Day 3: Visit up to 5 groups (nicer casual attire) Day 4: Visit up to 2 groups (Sunday best or attending a wedding attire) Day 5: Bid Day (find out which group has invited students to join!

C: Common Concerns/Questions of Families Cost: (See booklet and brochure for cost range) First semester will be most expensive due to one time/lifetime National fees Each group sets their own cost in partnership with National organization Each group has payment plans and options to work with members Students are encouraged to ask specific questions during recruitment Hazing: (See webpage for University’s Hazing policy) Hazing and inappropriate behavior is not tolerated Chapters are disciplined for events and activities that are not appropriate Chapters can lose their campus recognition for hazing violations

C: Common Concerns/Questions of Families Socials & Alcohol: NO Chapter funds can be used to purchase alcohol NO Chapter events involving alcohol can occur on chapter premises Every group has policies and regulations for the National organization that must be followed for events with alcohol The local governance groups have additional expectations and procedures that must be followed for events with alcohol. MUST use third party licensed provider if having an event with alcohol Time Commitment: Many of our Greek members also hold jobs on or off campus Most meetings are in the evenings (Night class is excused from meetings) Socials and Philanthropy events are on the weekend (not every weekend) Time management skills are enhanced with involvement in Fraternity/Sorority Life
