Presentation transcript:

Abraham's Son And Grandson We learned previously that Abraham was born in the year 1948 and when he was 75 years old he left his father's household and when from Haran to the land that God was to show him. The year that Abraham left Haran was then the year 2023 A.C. (1948 + 75 = 2023 A.C). Abraham is told that he is going to have a son and that his son's name should be Isaac. 3 And Abraham called the name of his son that was born unto him, whom Sarah bare to him, Isaac. 4 And Abraham circumcised his son Isaac being eight days old, as God had commanded him. 5 And Abraham was an hundred years old, when his son Isaac was born unto him.” Gen. 21:3-5. So we learn her that Abraham's son Isaac was born when he is 100 years old. (1948 + 100yrs. = 2048 A.C.). So we see that Isaac is born in the year 2048 A.C. The question is often asked how old was Sarah, Abraham's wife at the time Isaac was born, and what year was she born in? 17 Then Abraham fell upon his face, and laughed, and said in his heart, Shall a child be born unto him that is an hundred years old? and shall Sarah, that is ninety years old, bear? Gen. 17:17. This tells us that at the time Abraham was 100 that Sarah was 90 years old...therefore we conclude that Sarah was 10 years younger than Abraham and as such she was born in the year 1958 A.C. (1948 +100 = 2048 -90 = 1958 A.C.) Or we could figure it this way...If Abraham was 100 in 2048 then Sarah was 90 years old in 2048 A.C. Therefore Sarah 10 years younger than Abraham. 1948 + 10 = 1958 A.C.).

Isaac Has Two Son's “ 26 And after that came his brother out, and his hand took hold on Esau's heel; and his name was called Jacob: and Isaac was threescore years old when she bare them.” Gen. 25:26. Here we learn that Jacob is born when Isaac is threescore (or sixty) years old. (2048 A.C. + 60 = 2108 A.C.). Thus Jacob was born in the year 2108 A.C. In the 32nd chapter we read the story about Jacob wrestling with the angel and it is here in this chapter that we learn that Jacob's name is changed from Jacob to Israel. “ 27 And he said unto him, What is thy name? And he said, Jacob. 28 And he said, Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel: for as a prince hast thou power with God and with men, and hast prevailed.” Gen. 32:27-28.

Jacob Enters Egypt “ 9 And Jacob said unto Pharaoh, The days of the years of my pilgrimage are an hundred and thirty years: few and evil have the days of the years of my life been, and have not attained unto the days of the years of the life of my fathers in the days of their pilgrimage.” Gen. 47:9. Here we learn that Jacob (Israel) enters Egypt when he is 130 years of age. We know that he was born in the year 2108 A.C. And adding 130 years to that date tells us that he went into Egypt in the year 2238 A.C. (2108 + 130th = 2238 A.C.). Now the children of Israel are in Egypt. Some would argue that they were already there because Joseph was already in Egypt, but we must remember that it is Jacob whose name was changed to Israel, and we learn that the sojourn of Israel began with Jacob and not Joseph. The way we will know this is that this genealogy does not run through Joseph but rather through Jacob's son Levi (the third son) in birth order. However, it is important to know how old Joseph was at the time he was sold and also how old he was when Jacob came into Egypt so we shall take a look at what we are told about Joseph.

How Old Was Joseph At the time Joseph was sold he was 17 years of age. “2 These are the generations of Jacob. Joseph, being seventeen years old, was feeding the flock with his brethren; and the lad was with the sons of Bilhah, and with the sons of Zilpah, his father's wives: and Joseph brought unto his father their evil report.” Gen. 37:2. So we are told this information at the same time we are told about the Generations of Jacob and this normally would make us think that the generation would run through Joseph and it does, but The HOLY ONE had something very special for Joseph. The next time we hear about the age of Joseph is in the 41st chapter of Genesis which reads: “46 And Joseph was thirty years old when he stood before Pharaoh king of Egypt. And Joseph went out from the presence of Pharaoh, and went throughout all the land of Egypt.” Gen. 41:46. This information is given us right before the 7 years of Plenty begins in Egypt which is then followed by 7 years of famine. Now the above information is very important in order to figure how old Joseph was, and when his father, Jacob, came into Egypt. We should remember from our studies that it was the famine that brought Jacob and the children of Israel into Egypt . We are to listen to the words of Joseph when he gives us the information to his brothers right before Jacob comes into the land. “ 6 For these two years hath the famine been in the land: and yet there are five years, in the which there shall neither be earing nor harvest.” Gen. 45:6, and “11 And there will I nourish thee; for yet there are five years of famine; lest thou, and thy household, and all that thou hast, come to poverty.” Gen. 45:11 This information was given right after Joseph tell them where in Egypt they shall dwell....in the land of Goshen. With this information we learn that Jacob and his sons come into Egypt in the second year of the famine. Since Joseph was 30 when he was promoted by Pharoah put him in charge just before the 7 years of plenty started thus Joseph was 37 at the end of the 7 years of plenty and 39 at the time that 2 years of the famine had passed. So Joseph is 39 at the time Jacob comes to Egypt. (30 + 7 + 2 = 39 yoa.). Jacob comes to Egypt in the year 2238 A.C. and at that time Joseph is 39 therefore we learn that Joseph was born in the year 2199 A.C. (2238 – 39 = 2199).

Jacob The 22nd Generation 20th Abraham...... 21st Isaac. 22nd Jacob...... 23rd Levi 24th Kohath...... 25th Amram 26th Moses. We know when Jacob is born...when he goes to Egypt ...he lived to be 147 years old living in Egypt 17 years. “ 28 And Jacob lived in the land of Egypt seventeen years: so the whole age of Jacob was an hundred forty and seven years.” Gen. 47:28. What we know about Levi is that lived to be 137 years old. We also know he was born before Joseph as Levi was 3rd of the sons in birth order and Joseph was 11. We also know that all eleven of Jacob's sons were born within a 7 year period and that it is therefore believed that there was 4 years difference in the birth of Levi and the birth of Joseph. Since we have learned the birth of Joseph had to have been 2199 A.C. From the text we can then subtract 4 years from that and understand that Levi was born in the year 2195 A.C. (more on the dating of Levi's birth another time). “16 And these are the names of the sons of Levi according to their generations; Gershon, and Kohath, and Merari: and the years of the life of Levi were an hundred thirty and seven years. Ex. 6:16. Kothah lived 133 years. 18 And the sons of Kohath; Amram, and Izhar, and Hebron, and Uzziel: and the years of the life of Kohath were an hundred thirty and three years.” Ex. 6:18. And Kohath's son Amram who is the father of Moses lived to be 137 years old. “20 And Amram took him Jochebed his father's sister to wife; and she bare him Aaron and Moses: and the years of the life of Amram were an hundred and thirty and seven years.” Ex. 6:20. We are not given the birth year of Kohath and Amram we need to understand that if God did not give us information here. This will cause us to look elsewhere for information that can be linked between one of the above and the time of the Exodus. We do know that. Moses was 80 years old at the time of the Exodus....more on this later. .
