IRONY Irony is a difference between the appearance and the reality; the opposite of what is expected or intended. There are three essential types of irony.

Dramatic Irony Dramatic irony is when the audience knows what is happening before the characters do. For example, many horror movies utilize dramatic irony. We know that the actor or actress should not open the door at the end of the long, dark hallway, but they don’t know.

Situational Irony Situational irony is a contrast between what the reader expects to happen and what actually happens.

Verbal Irony Verbal irony is a contrast between what is said or written and what is really meant. In essence, verbal irony is when we say one thing but really mean another, similar to sarcasm.
