Computers and How they Work SOAR Poject part 3 Option 2 Computers and How they Work SOAR Poject part 3

Introduction How does each component in a PC function and how do they correspond with each other? The idea of our project is to break apart and research the computer to find out what it is made up of, how it effects the computer, and how it helps and causes the computer to run. We chose this topic because computers are a big part of our lives and we hope to learn how they work, because if our computer ever breaks, we will know what happened and how to fix it.

Branch of Science This project involves the engineering and technology part of science, because computers are used everyday and are evolving. Each day scientists and engineers find ways to make the computer faster, smarter, and better.

Facts and Statistics The CPU is the brain of the computer. RAM, or Random Access Memory, is responsible for the speediness of the computer. (RAM, 2016) The graphics card affects the graphical power capabilities and picture quality of the PC. The Hard Drive/ SSD stores all of the data and files on your computer. (How PCs Work, 2001)

J. Presper Eckert and John Mauchly J. Presper Eckert and John Mauchly designed and created the first general purpose digital computer in 1945. The computer, ENIAC, could solve math problems that were previously impossible. It was about 1000 times more powerful that the existing technology. (ENIAC, 2016) Eckert and Mauchly also started the first ever computer company, the Eckert-Mauchly Computer Corporation (EMCC) They later also designed the UNIVAC I, the first commercial computer in the United States.

Bill Gates Bill Gates created some of the earliest computers, microcomputers and worked with IBM. When he was only a teenager, he invited a traffic measuring system known as “Traf-O-Data.” During College, he wrote a program for the Altair computers, which had no screen or keyboard. The program made the machine easier to use. (The Classroom, 2016) Bill Gates now owns one of the biggest computer companies on Earth, Microsoft.

Steve Jobs Steve Jobs we co-founder and CEO of one of the most successful computer companies, Apple. He created the first Apple computer in 1976 at the age of 21, and everyday he sat on the phone trying to get sponsors. He eventually got funding from a retired Intel product marketing manager, who said he was successful at a young age. He later invited the Macintosh operating system, and helped design and invent the iPhone, iPod, and iPad. (Steve Jobs,2016)

Scientific Relevance A lot is known already about computers. Scientists discover each day a little on how to make the computer better. This topic is important to the scientific community because computers are used each day and are part of our daily life now. Finding out ways how the computer works is just the start of finding out how to make the computer faster to use.

Application Computers can be used for work, education, and entertainment. You can research on a computer, play games, watch movies, and more. Computers are used everyday by most people in society and are a big part of most people’s lives. In the future, even more people will use computers. Knowing what parts in a computer and how they work will be essential to know.

Conclusion This topic is important to me because I use computers probably more than the average human. I want to pursue the general topic of computers during college, and hopefully, as a career. By researching information for this project, I am learning more about something might be related to my future job.
