Outline Problem Statement Background Motivation Design Requirements Proposed Designs Design Matrix Future Work

Problem Statement Develop a device which will automatically deploy a suture to a specific region of the nose. Applicable to two of the most common nasal surgeries.

Background Rhinoplasty Septoplasty modify the shape and size of a nose corrects any deformation of nasal septum

Background Suture Fine threads joining two surfaces Introduced by the ancient Egyptians Stapler Caesarean sections and intestinal surgery Staples: different sizes and materials

Motivation A currently simple but tedious procedure Save both time and money Increase quality of the suture

Requirements The accuracy and reliability of the device must be comparable to the current standard procedure Surgeon and client safety must be maintained Cost per device must not exceed $300

Autosuture Varying patterns Curved or linear needle Mimic current methods used by surgeons

Pros and Cons Widely accepted by surgeons Ensure the safety of the patient Different types of suturing material – non-absorbable or absorbable Very difficult to build Not adjustable to different sizes

Medical Glue Several different types Absorption and drying time both vary Can be ordered in large quantities Gaining popularity among surgeons

Pros and Cons Success in medical studies Quick and easy to apply Long shelf life Must be coupled with nasal packing (risk of TSS) Risky to patient

Surgical Stapler Similar in function to a paper stapler Becoming commonplace in operations Non-absorbable & absorbable staples

Pros and Cons Sterile Safe Accurate Easy to modify Simpler mechanism Does not replicate current technique
