WHY? Because… searching for information should not make you feel like this!

Questions about the Readings When might you use primary or original research articles in your future profession? Name three identifying features of a primary or original research article? Name three important differences between scholarly literature and the Google/free web? Give an example of secondary literature specific to the health sciences.

Questions about the Readings What is the difference between Open Access and Public Access? Why does it matter where information comes from? Of what value is peer review? Go to PubMed.gov. In the search box at the top, type in protein intake AND diabetes. Click on the link for the article by Bellizzi V. Can you get access to this article? How much will it cost you? Why is information expensive? Should it be?

Let’s say we want to look at the literature published on the effect of Vitamin E on pregnancy, specifically, what are unsafe dosage considerations.

Typing in a sentence only works if it’s a title! Check out the search details: the database has searched each term individually and has AND’ed them all resulting in ZILCH.

simple keyword search: remember, less is more. The MeSH Database searches using controlled language and results in an accurate, directed search. PubMed

In the search box, type vitamin e In the search box, type vitamin e. Click the box to the left of the Vitamin E and ‘Add to Search Builder’.

Click back into the search box at the top and search for pregnancy Click back into the search box at the top and search for pregnancy. Add to search builder. It automatically joins them with an AND but you can choose OR or NOT if it’s appropriate. Then click ‘Search PubMed’.

OR AND combines terms to narrow a search. OR makes the search larger.

Click on Customize and choose the Article Type: ‘Systematic Review’, then Show. Then click on your choice to limit the search. Click on ‘Show Additional Filters’ to see more choices.

Go Back to MeSH, search Vitamin E again Go Back to MeSH, search Vitamin E again. This time, click on the hyperlink.

Subheadings limit the number of articles retrieved and makes the search more specific. Everything on this page helps you to search more accurately.

Web of Science Add your topic to the search box. Note the ‘+Add Another Field’ button to be more specific. You can also refine additional fields by author, journal, etc.

Web of Science Change Record Count to Alphabetical if you wish. Find/choose ‘nutrition dietetics’.
