AG Shop Safety – Grinding Machines, Portable and Stationary Mr. Meredith Welding Tech. I / II & Equipment Construction

Grinding Wheel The greatest danger of shatter occurs while the grinder is building up speed. Workers in the shop should closely watch another person when starting the grinder.

Watch for Flying Particles Particles from a wheel may fly quite a distance and endanger a nearby worker. The operator should stand to the side when he starts a grinder. Workings in the surrounding area should be aware of others.

Tool Rest The tool rest should be adjusted as close to the grinding wheel as possible (Max of 1/8") and level with the center of the arbor.   This is so the work cannot be wedged between the wheel and the tool rest. If an adjustment is necessary, the grinding wheel must be stopped and the machine unplugged.

Heavy Grinding As a rule heavy grinding should never be done on the side of a small grinding wheel (1/2" width or less) Sharpening and Very light grinding may be done on the side of the wheel. This could result in undercutting the wheel And may result in the wheel shattering. A wheel, which shatters at a high speed, throws its pieces very hard in all directions. We only sharpen soapstone on the sides of wheels.

Grinding Small Objects Small objects should never be ground without consulting the instructor. The piece will quite likely not be grounded safely in the usual procedure. If it must be ground, the instructor can provide you with a safe method.

How to Hold Tools All tools should be held at the center or above while being ground, this is called grinding against the rotation of the wheel. The tool will not be pulled out of your hand or allow stock to be pulled in.

Danger of Rags Never use a rag to hold objects that are to be ground. The rag may become caught in the wheel causing injury to operator and damage to the machine.

Flying Sparks Be aware of flying sparks and caution fellow students when using the portable grinder in their presence. Sparks can cause serious injury. Common courtesy demands that we look out for the welfare of fellow workers.

Wait Until the Grinder Stops! Never lay a portable grinder on the bench or floor while it’s running. The grinder may fall over rubbing the wheel or disk on the bench top or floor causing sparks or damage to the wheel or disk. Wait for the machine to stop before setting it down.

Hold on to that Grinder!!! Keep a firm grip on all portable grinders and buffers. Allowing for loss of control of as grinder can cause an injury to yourself or others around.
