ECOSYSTEM OF THE ARCTIC INDUSTRY ARCTIC INNOVATIONS Operational environment and unique innovation platform Kemi-Tornio region produces almost 8 % of Finnish export 1,4 Mt of by-products and residues (without waste rock) State of the art sustainable process industrial base and logistic hub World-class service providers! Tapojärvi mine operations Pohjaset SMA-Mineral Ases CLT development platform Then we continue with secondary raw materials in Kemi-Tornio region in Southern Lapland where 1,4 Mt of by-products and residues with good utilization potential are generated annually. More than seventy trucks per day! Industry concists of… and is like miniature of industry cross-section or portrait in North Calotte. This is the cradle of Ecosystem of the Arctic Industry! Two of the world’s northernmost pulp mills and paper and board mills and Sustainable use of raw materials: Sertified, responsibly managed and sustainable use of forests – More wood grows than it is used annually in Finland. Outokumpu Tornio is most integrated steel mill in the world. Outokumpu also owns the largest known chromite reserves in Europe, Kemi mine, and thus has unique competitive advantage in its access to raw material. The most significant raw material is recycled steel, and the recycled content in the ready-made products is in average more than 80%. Lot’s of arctic expertise in industry service companies. For example company called Tapojärvi which has their own plant inside Outokumpu where they are recycling and recovering metals and mineral back to production from slags and same time producing slag to by-product. Veinstone is left-over stone from mineral ore and it’s not included in the figures. Birthplace of a 1,3 million tons per year of industrial by-products, equals 25 000 trucks and that is almost seventy trucks per day all year round. But lot’s of potential is still to cash out in circular economy and industrial symbiosis point of view. Especially what comes to utilization of wastes and side streams: waste minimization is ongoing process, but We also need possibility to create symbiotic products from combinations of two or more streams. Utilisation of the arctic natural resources – Lapland's Arctic Industry Lappi faktoja: alueen koko, väkimäärä jne. Production sites Under construction Planned investments World class exploration projects

ARCTIC BUSINESS CONCEPT ABC Modern Cluster of Arctic industry – Sustainable utilisation of the arctic natural resources Model region to demonstrate EC new wave cluster policy: The region possesses the vast deposits of natural resources and pristine nature Lapland has potential to become one of the leading regions in the world in the sustainable exploitation of natural resources The region should focus on refining of Arctic natural resources in a socially and ecologically sustainable manner, combined with high value added generation from natural resources in the region Focus on to maintain the balance in the sustainable development Lapland has been chosen in 2014 to one of the six model regions in EU in modern cluster strategy development. Our core theme is Sustainable utilisation of the arctic natural resources. Earlier mentioned positive industrial pressure and need to be proactive are the the reasons why we in Lapland have to continue in this path! We have to be extremely sustainable and competitive while refining the Arctic natural resources!
