What are the trade unions?

Trade union is voluntary and independent workers organisation, made to represent and defence their social and professional rights and businesses. Trade unions in Poland are based on the art. 59 of the Polish Constitution and the Act from 23 May 1991 about trade unions.

How do they work?

Trade unions in Poland appear in the 30% of companies Trade unions in Poland appear in the 30% of companies. The larger company is, the more often the trade unions are.

In their activity the trade unions are independent of the employer, the Civil Service or the local government.

The aim of the trade unions’ activities is a direct impact on the labour market and situations of the employee.

Position and role of trade unions in Poland

Trade unions are fragmented because of their structure and the ideological divisions. In Poland they are heavily politicized.

They are strongly limited by Polish law. They fight for workers’ rights. They can represent them on international level.

History of NSZZ ”Solidarność”

It was the first independent, legal trade union in communist Poland which was established in 1980. Lech Wałęsa led ”Solidarność”. The legal operations of the trade union lasted to the moment of implementing the martial law. 1981 was a period of provocations from the authority which headed disposable”Solidarność”.

During the martial law mass arrests of ”Solidarność” activists took place and the existence of the connection was hung. However, ”Solidarność” moved for the underground activity. Strikes resumed in 1988 became a direct cause of conversation communist authorities with the trade union.

It led to a round-table conference It led to a round-table conference. As a result of her arrangements ”Solidarność” was again registered on April 1989. After the legalization it gathered the 1.5 million of members. Electors associated with "Solidarność" decided also about the victory of Lech Wałęsa in presidential elections in December 1990.

Influence of trade unions on the decision in our country and in workplace

In Poland trade unions are not as strong as in European Union countries. They deal with less important cases. They can organise national strike
