Presentation transcript:

What are you going to do in the future? Post 16 Options Information Evening 05/10/17

Aims of this evening To make you all aware of what the options are for next September... To support the students in meeting the deadline for all Year 12 applications (16th December)... To support the students more generally with their future plans... To raise the profile of CEIAG (Careers Education, Information, Advice & Guidance)...

Present This Evening Bexhill College DV8 Sussex Plumpton College Rye Studio School Sussex Coast College Sussex Downs College YES (Youth Employabilty Service)

Not just decisions for next September... Choices made now can affect the choices you have available at 18... Are you thinking of university? Certain careers (e.g. Nursing) now require a degree... It is predicted that on average each of you will have at least 6 different jobs by the time you retire... No such thing as a ‘job for life’ anymore... Key message here is be prepared to be flexible what you might end up doing in the future and the better your GCSE results next August the more options you have for the future ...

The CEIAG journey 2016-17 July Careers Fair & Progression Morning Open Days to Sussex Coast & Bexhill College Careers Guidance Interviews Extended Assembly tomorrow (9am start) College Open Evenings Applications by 16th December Interviews in early 2017 GCSE Results Day August 24th Start Year 12 September

What are the options at 16+? Full time college/6th form (90% of last Yr 11) for both academic and vocational courses Apprenticeship Employment (with training) Personalised Learning Programme

What level course can I access? Entry Level Below GCSE Level 1 – GCSE grades D – G NVQ Level 1 BTEC Level 2 – GCSE grades A* - C NVQ Level 2 Level 3 – AS/A Levels NVQ Level 3

UCAS Progress https://www.ucasprogress.com All college applications now made via this website... Usernames/logins currently being issued... Once logged in password can be changed... You need to log into this and answer the initial questions asap... Contact details, Personal Information, Qualifications (predicted grades), Any work experience, Personal Statement... You will need a referee... Search for courses... Apply for courses... You can apply for more than one course and then select your preferences...

Important to remember with college applications You might be guaranteed a place at college but there are no guarantees what course you will end up doing… Be prepared to travel... Don’t be too influenced by your friends... Drop out rates on college courses are high because too many students do not do the research and do not realise what they are signing up for...

Common mistakes with Post 16 Options Choosing A levels/Level 3 courses when they are going to be too difficult… Choosing too specific qualifications too early and so limiting career options… Not having alternative plans if initial career plans don’t come off… Just doing a certain course for the sake of it because you don’t have any better ideas… Not taking Year 11 seriously enough and not getting the grades (and so not having the options) you are capable of… Being lazy, irresponsible and complacent about life and then suddenly getting a serious wake up call a few years later…

General Advice Take all of this very seriously…. Find out what the different and realistic options are for you. Have a back up plan if your preferred option doesn’t work out… Consider university as an option for 2 years time... Keep your career options open. Don’t limit your options for later on… Don’t be too influenced by your friends… Try to get the GCSE grades you need to do what you want!
