APLU Study Abroad Proposal 2017

Executive Summary The General Coordination for Cooperation and Internationalization (GCCI) at the University of Guadalajara (UDG) is offering a Summer Spanish Language Program to the Association of Public Land-grant Universities (APLU), which consists of 5 weeks with 60 hours of Spanish instruction, 20 hours of Mexican History and Culture class for Spanish learners, and 20 hours of a mix of reading and oral expression workshops, and 1-on-1 conversation activities with local students The program fee is $ 2,500.00 USD. The minimum participants in the program are 100 students and the maximum are 200 students. UDG is willing to offer 50% scholarships to the first 100 students.

Academic credits for APLU members “6 hours of transfer credit would be based on 75 hours of instruction”. Thanks to the document Dr. Mabe shared to the staff working on the proposal, the following was identified: Direct faculty instruction is not the only amount of work necessary to grant academic credits but also “other academic activities or instructional modes of delivery as established by the institution including distance education, hybrid, and face-to-face instruction, laboratory work, internships, practica, studio work, and other academic work leading to the award of credit hours” (p. 1).

Academic credits The Spanish Program for Foreigners at University of Guadalajara meets the requirements in order to provide credits for APLU institutions. The program grants 6 academic credits and the study hours are as follow: 80 hours of in class study and practice of the Spanish language, divided in: 60 hours of Spanish as a second language class. 20 hours of Mexican History and Culture for Spanish language learners (from basic to advanced levels). 20 hours of practice and interaction with local UDG students. Reading workshop Oral expression workshop 101 tandem conversations Cultural immersion activities inside and outside Guadalajara   For a total of 100 hours.

Official academic transcripts At the end of the program, UDG will issue official paper academic transcripts. Such transcripts will be mailed to the designated office of each participant’s university in a sealed envelope. These transcripts will be official only when they are obtained by the recipient directly from the General Coordination for Cooperation and Internationalization (CGCI) at UDG. Further authentication can be obtained by contacting CGCI.

Characteristics of the transcripts In order to get the student’s official transcripts, APLU universities, with students registered in PEPE, must share a contact person and an address to the coordinators of the program. The issued documents will have the following characteristics: A letter that certifies the studied course, grades, credits earned, and the period of study. This letter will be signed by the Registrar Coordinator and the Administrative Secretary of the host university center; An academic transcript including the student’s name, ID number, grade, credits earned, student’s status and study period. This transcript will be signed by the Registrar Coordinator of the host university center.

What does the fee include? Spanish classes according to the participants’ level Mexican History and Culture class for Spanish learners 1-on-1 tandem activities Reading and oral expression workshops Cultural activities and sightseen trips Didactic materials Room & Board Welcome kit Transportation airport–hotel, and hotel–airport at the end of the program Certificate of participation Academic credits

Dates and sites The program dates is: from june 23rd – July 28th. It will take place in the University Campus of Economic and Managerial Science “CUCEA”, located in the metropolitan area of Guadalajara, and in the University Campus of the Coast “CUCOSTA”, in Puerto Vallarta.

Sites

Accomodations In México, most public Universities do not count with student´s dormitories in their facilities. Therefore, the participants will be accommodated in secured and clean hotels, preferably within walking distance to the University Center. These hotels will have shared rooms with two double beds, closet, bathroom, study area, television, etc.

Meals and transportation The cost of the program includes three daily meals, from Monday to Sunday. Some of these will be provided at either their hotel or in the school facilities. Regarding transportation, UDG will provide students the following: Pick-up and drop-off services from/to the airport. Transportation to all the programmed activities.

Flight tickets and health insurance The participants are expected to purchase their arrival and departure tickets and a health insurance with international coverage (not included in the fee).
