Nanotechnology in Textiles The future of clothing

What do all these clothing items have in common?

Nanotechnology: What is Nanotechnology? How is it used in textiles? What are the Characteristics of Nanotechnology? Product Serviceability?

History of Nanotechnology Most fiber technology evolves to meet the needs of the consumer. History of clothing and its uses.

What is Nanotechnology? Nanotechnology is a very complex field combining science, technology, engineering, and math. A nanometer is one billionth of a meter. Nanometers are so small that 150,000 of them fit across the width of a strand of human hair.

How is Nanotechnology used in textiles? Nano Enhancements: Spills roll off and stains wash out Odors lock in and wash out Eliminates Static Many of these are used in your clothing your wearing today!

How is it done? Embedded into liquid polymers Applied to fabric surface in finishing Particles are permanently attached

What are the Characteristics of Nanotechnology? Nanowhiskers Nanopores Nanoparticles

Serviceability of Nanotechnology Improvement of fabric properties without a significant increase in weight, thickness, or stiffness. Company Product Advantage Nano-tex Fabric enhanced with nanowhiskers  Water and stain resistant Aspen Aerogel Fabric enhanced with nanopores Insulates against heat or chill BASF Fabric enhanced with nanoparticles (Mincor® TX TT) Dirt rinses off in rain, similar to property of the lotus plant NanoHorizons Fabric enhanced with  silver nanoparticles Reduces odors
