Lets recall some things; Atomic Mass: Atomic number Valence electrons. Lewis dot diagram lab

Lets colour in our tables The periodic table may appear to be overwhelming, but its actually organized quite clearly. The period table is arranged by number. (as we have seen). The periodic table is arranged into horizontal rows, called periods. There are seven periods.

3. The periodic table is also arranged into columns called groups (or families). There are 18 groups.

Group 18 Noble Gases: -have ________VALENCE ELECTRONS -have __________outer orbital -used in bright signs Page 16: look at the colours that the gases form!

Group 17 Halogens: -______________valence electrons Missing _______ electron to be complete. -SUPER REACTIVE; they react really easily with other elements on the periodic table. Especially those in group 1. WHY IS THIS????

Example; Fluorine only needs one electron. How bad do you think it wants it?

Group 1 Reactive non-metals (alkali metals) -have __________ valence electron -losing one electron would give the element a stable orbital. (except for Li). They are very reactive

Group 2 Alkali earth metals; Have ________- electrons in their outer orbit. -not as reactive as group 1, but still, they only need to give away two electrons to gain a full outer orbital. -which elements NEED two electrons?

Group 16 -they need two electrons, therefore they will react with group 2 the most. Oxygen reeealllllyy wants those electrons……

Groups 3-12 TRANSITION METALS -usually contain 1-3 valence electrons -only Hg is liquid at room temperature. -some are un- reactive such as gold (Ag) and platinum (Pt)

metalloids -make a zig zag line which divides the metals with the non-metals. -this means, they can either be metals or non- metals depending on the conditions.

hydrogen -he is so lonely, as he does not fit in. -only has _________-electron. -can react with a lot of the elements, and does not share properties with any of them. Example: oxygen can react with TWO hydrogen atoms to form _____________
