Warm UP Form the picture Define in your own words element? Elements are chemically the simples substance, cannot be broken down using chemical methods

With your group Direction for activity List of possible elements to choose form Look at the materials that you have and decide on the composition. Regarding the composition of the given material how many elements can you name ? Support your answer! One person in group will write the elements into their notebook and I will call on a person to share. What is the periodic table? It is a chart that organizes the elements by their increasing atomic numbers as well as by their physical and chemical properties.

Who made the periodic table and when was it created? A Russian chemist and inventor named Dmitri Mendeleev created the periodic table in 1869.

3) What ability did the periodic table have? The periodic table was designed to make room for and predict the existence of elements that had not yet been discovered.

Elements Atomic Number: # of protons in nucleus (which = electrons) top number Symbol: 1 to 2 letters, first letter is capital (based off Latin name) Atomic mass: mass of the atom -in amu (bottom #)

Elements are made of atoms: Atoms are made of protons, neutrons in the middle, surrounded by electrons

Amu= atomic mass unit: both protons and neutrons have a mass of 1 amu atomic mass is equal to # of protons + # neutrons - electrons have “no” mass

ORGANIZATION OF THE PERIODIC TABLE One way to classify the elements on the periodic table is by the periods and groups to which they belong. Periods Periods are the horizontal rows on the periodic table and are number from 1-7. Elements in the same period have consecutive atomic numbers, but they differ predictably in their chemical properties. Groups Groups or families are the vertical columns on the periodic table, numbered from 1-8. Elements in the same group usually have similar properties

Each column is called a GROUP and there are 18 of them. 8) What is each row on the periodic table called and how many of them are there? Each row is called a PERIOD and there are 7 of them.

 12) Which is the only non-metal element that is not located with the rest? Circle it and label it “non-metal”. HYDROGEN is the only non-metal element that is not located with the rest. 


13) Where are the metalloids found and how many of them are there? The metalloids are found directly around the staircase. There are 8 of them. 13

Properties of Nonmetals: Poor (bad) conductors of heat and electricity, non magnetic, Solids are brittle (break instead of bend) Non Malleable. Generally the opposite of metals

Metalloids: have Properties of both metals and nonmetals Metalloids: have Properties of both metals and nonmetals - B, Si, Ge, As, Sb, Te, Po, At

Chemical Reaction Equation Fe + O2  Fe2O3 Reactants products Above chemical reaction is in equation form Reactants = left side (Fe and O2) Products = right side (Fe2O3) Reaction =Chemical change! How do you know if a chemical reaction is happening?

Indicators of chemical reaction: Temperature Change (or flames) Color change Gas Forms (bubbles) Precipitation (Something solid forms, rust) Odor Change (Smell)

Summary: Metals are elements that have a luster, are malleable, and conduct electricity. Many metals react with acids and with copper (II) chloride solution. Nonmetals are usually dull in appearance, brittle, and do not conduct electricity. Most nonmetals do not react with acids or with copper (II) chloride solution. Elements that have some properties of both metals and nonmetals are metalloids.
