Project History Using a technique known as Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV), particle dynamics in the human lung are being researched Better understanding of particle dynamics in the human lung can lead to improved treatment of pulmonary illnesses
Needs Assessment Limited to a two dimensional analysis Cumbersome positioning system Manual camera focus Difficult to maintain perpendicularity between camera and Light sheet generator
Concept Development The Globe The light sheet generator is kept stable and the model is positioned as needed Model support rotates on a hemispherical optical stage
Concept Development The Gyro Similar to the Globe concept, the light sheet generator is kept stable and the model is positioned as needed A U-shaped bracket provides one of the rotational degrees of freedom
Concept Development The Ring The camera and LSG move in unison around the stationary model The ring is supported by a roller assembly
Concept Development The Claw The camera and LSG move in unison around the quasi-stationary model Camera and LSG are mounted on robot-like arms
Feasibility Various feasibility methods were applied to our concepts and the Claw deemed the most feasible More technically feasible because Most positional freedom of all the concepts Much more mechanically stable Posed less design concerns More Financially feasible because Falls within the $2000 budget
Summary of Major Design Objectives and Performance Specifications All flow passageways must be accessible to the PIV imagery equipment Does the apparatus provide the necessary degrees of freedom of motion to allow all the passageways to be analyzed? The light sheet generator and the camera are to be located perpendicular to each other in a single two-dimensional plane Do the light sheet generator and the camera exhibit 90 +/- 2 degrees of perpendicularity when an object of similar tolerance is placed between them? The camera focus will be adjustable by the operator at the PC workstation Is the camera focus adjustable while seated at the PC workstation?
Analysis and Synthesis Through in-depth study of the claw, the following design issues have been identified Motor Control System for Camera Focus Torque due to the claw mechanism Locking mechanism for claw spindle System deflection
Analysis and Synthesis Motor Control System Superior Electric Stepper Motor Drive control Motorola MC3479 stepper driver used with an LTC timer (clock circuit) to make the control system User control box will allow control of the motor speed and direction
Analysis and Synthesis Torque due to claw mechanism Moment about x axis and weight determines the size of slides needed Moment about the y axis determines the rotational locking force of the claw arm assembly Z Y X
Analysis and Synthesis Locking mechanism for claw spindle interface Frictional brake was chosen because of its simplicity
Analysis and Synthesis System deflection Pin Half inch diameter pin used to keep the deflection down Shaft material was chosen for maximum strength
Analysis and Synthesis System deflection Extension Arm SMI Inc. part number extm45-45 aluminum extruded x channel was used for rigidity Strengthening gussets are used at the extension arm joints
