Tutorial participation Some international students often are reluctant to participate in the tutorial due to the lack of confidence, language skills or shyness. Or over-riding factors like Being unsure of the implicit social conventions for turn-taking in group discussion Feeling hesitant to interrupt another speaker and causing offence or embarrassment. Suggestions: make the expectation clear & unambiguous; use “icebreakers”; use open-ended questions, Ensure you show value to all answers. English Language Skills Irrespective of having high scores in English Language test IELTS/TOEFL)- students may have difficulty understanding spoken/written language. Wording in exam/test papers need careful attention- words may seem to be clear to native speaker but they can be highly ambiguous to Non-English Speaking Backgrounds) Provide them some time to adjust with Australian accent. Encourage the students to read as much as they can in English (newspaper/magazine/ academic text..) & also listening to Radio & have conversation in English in campus/with friends & families.
