Session outline Define mentorship and identify where they can obtain mentorship Define networking and the importance of developing networks in business

What is mentoring? Mentoring is defined as a relationship in which an experienced entrepreneur assists another in developing specific skills and knowledge that will enhance the less-experienced entrepreneur’s business and personal growth.

Mentorship Business mentoring is crucial to success. There are various types of business mentoring including: Counselling and guidance by successful business persons, peers and professionals; Sharing of experiences in business forums and associations; Attachment and practical training;

What does mentoring involve? It involves personal and lifestyle issues which require the engagement of specialised professionals. Common issues include: How to manage personal finances; Time management; Effective communication; Managing lifestyle and chronic diseases including HIV/AIDS; Managing stress; Managing alcohol and drug abuse; Separating family from business matters; Crisis management; Handling peer pressure; Handling success; Managing partnership and groups (group dynamics, inside politics etc.)

What is Networking? Networking involves individuals forming mutually supportive relationships. It calls for developing and maintaining contacts and personal connections with people who might be helpful to you and your enterprise. It is necessary to develop networks as one begins to grow a business.

Examples of good networks Current and former co-workers Professional associations – through being a member and serving in committees enables other members to see you in action Friends and family – it is always good to keep them involved in your business growth Trainers, Instructors, Teachers, Lecturers, Classmates Other similar businesses Suppliers Regular customers/clients.

Networking essentials Meeting new people who can be of help Collecting and updating contact information such as emails, phone numbers, etc. Keeping in regular contact Thanking people for their help Helping others when asked Sharing what you think is important information with others.

Importance of Networking It creates a pool of contacts from where you can draw leads, referrals, ideas and information. It provides a wealth of knowledge and expertise which enables learning from others. It helps in problem solving since there are many people to consult. It enables one to know about emerging opportunities.
