Birth and family John Steinbeck was born in 1902 in Salinas California. He was the second of four children (and the only boy). Although his family was wealthy, he was interested in the lives of the farm labourers and spent time working with them. He used his experiences as material for his writing.

School After graduating from high school in 1919, Steinbeck enrolled at Stanford University. In 1925, he left for good. He never received a college degree, though he always spoke fondly of Stanford. He didn’t graduate.

Novels Steinbeck's first novel, Cup of Gold, was published in 1929, and was followed by The Pastures of Heaven and, in 1933, To a God Unknown. However, his first three novels were unsuccessful both.

Death John Steinbeck died in New York City on December 20, 1968, of heart disease and congestive heart failure.
