What is unique about studying a LCTL? Tuition support  Free travel and language learning is available Heritage language International work Academic research Tuition support can be received through FLAS (see below) for U.S. Citizens learning LCTLs Free travel and language learning is available to students through various programs (listed on our website). These programs tend to prioritize applicants who have some prior knowledge of the language, which can be gained through our program. Heritage language: Many students enroll to learn a LCTL because it i’s their heritage or ancestral language and connects them to their personal history.  International work: Learning a LCTL positions you well to engage in governmental and non-governmental work internationally. Many government organizations prioritize applicants who study one of our LCTLs.  Academic research: LCTLs usually go hand -in -hand with areas of the world which that are less commonly researched. Knowing a LCTL allows you to engage in much- needed pioneering research. http://lctl.linguistics.illinois.edu/
